It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Meleniatè Tutu’ataki’au Fehoka-Kalatiamaha, fondly known as “Mele,” on May 2, 2026, at the age of 84. Mele left this world surrounded by her beloved family in the comfort of her home, a testament to the love and warmth that she herself radiated throughout her life.
Born in the picturesque island of Vava’u, Tonga, on February 10, 1942, Mele was the cherished daughter of Nukatafa’tafa’eohoko Nukela “Kela” Fehoka, who predeceased her. Her early years on the island were filled with the joys of family and community, where she developed a lifelong dedication to caring for others and a profound spiritual connection to her heritage.
Mele grew up alongside her sisters, Hifaholani “Hifa” Fakapahà-Fehoka, Talapukiha “Talapu” Hakafonui, Tefihèmaha’mahafeketi “Keti” Malapu’Tonga, and Heifo’atataki Seilala “Lala” Ngata, and her brothers, Folauikata “Folau” Fehoka and Himitani “Taniela” Fehoka. Together, they forged bonds that remained unbreakable throughout the years, grounding Mele in the values of unity and resilience.
In her early twenties, Mele met and fell in love with Fikitafa Filimonekini Kalatiamaha, with whom she shared a beautiful and devoted marriage. Together, they built a family filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Mele was the proud mother of four children: her sons, Himifaka’faka “Himi” Kalatiamaha and Talaniau Talani Kalatiamaha, who predeceased her, and her surviving children, Fe’ehalaketimapu Hilèmapu Kalatiamaha and Fonuihakalapu Fonui Kalatiamaha, along with her daughters, Fineitakalaniketi “Keti” Monroe and Tuifakalupi’ofangi’fangi “Kalupi” Kalatiamaha.
Mele’s legacy extends beyond her immediate family to her cherished 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each of whom she adored and nurtured with her characteristic warmth and wisdom. She relished her role as matriarch, guiding her family with grace and an unyielding commitment to their happiness and success.
Throughout her life, Mele was a beacon of love and compassion. She possessed a quiet strength and a gentle spirit that touched the hearts of all who knew her. Her home was a sanctuary of peace, where visitors were always greeted with open arms and a welcoming smile.
Mele’s life was a testament to the power of love, family, and faith. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have expressed their condolences and support during this difficult time. As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, we find solace in knowing that Mele’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she loved.
A celebration of Mele’s life will be held in her honor in Vava’u, where her journey began, allowing family and friends to gather in remembrance and appreciation of a life that was a true blessing to us all.
