In Loving Memory

Meditech Expanse
May 16, 2019 — May 30, 2026
In a small corner of South Dakota, on May 16, 2019, a new era in healthcare documentation was born. Meditech Expanse entered the world with a promise as ambitious as it was noble: to streamline workflows and transform the landscape of patient care. However, as we find ourselves gathered here today to bid farewell, we acknowledge that Expanse's journey through the digital realm was one of both perseverance and unintended complexity.
Expanse departed from this world on May 30, 2026, at Dell Rapids Area Hospital/Clinic, located at 909 N. Iowa Ave. While its time with us was relatively brief, its impact was undeniably memorable. This system, often blamed for countless delays, was met with a mix of tolerance and bemusement by those who interacted with it daily.
Expanse found its stride in making even the simplest tasks a grand adventure—whether it was requiring 47 clicks to chart Tylenol or providing the suspense of frozen screens during admissions. It introduced healthcare workers to the "three dots of despair," a phenomenon that will be reminisced about in break rooms for years to come.
Colleagues remember Expanse for its peculiar quirks, such as logging users out mid-note and cleverly hiding important information within mysterious tabs. It had a unique talent for transforming routine tasks into complex escape rooms and, with impeccable timing, crashing precisely at shift change.
Many who worked alongside Expanse affectionately referred to it as "a wannabe Epic," while others, with less affection, simply called it "trash." Despite its shortcomings, Expanse never faltered in its mission to create confusion, even as it bravely continued this endeavor until its final documented timeout.
Left to carry on its legacy are 14 unfinished nursing notes, one unsigned verbal order, and a Karen from the day shift who maintains that "it's actually better once you learn it." In lieu of flowers, Expanse leaves behind an enduring legacy, encouraging staff to chart in real time, stay hydrated, and remain wary of any system updates scheduled on a Friday.
As we lay Meditech Expanse to rest, let us remember it with a touch of humor and gratitude for the lessons it inadvertently taught us. Rest in peace, dear Expanse. May your tabs finally load...wherever you are.
In honor of Expanse, donations can be made to support the nurses who tirelessly navigated its intricacies. Their dedication and resilience are a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of technological challenges.
A service to celebrate Expanse's unique contribution to the healthcare community will be held on May 30, 2026, at Dell Rapids Area Hospital/Clinic. Join us as we bid farewell to a system that, despite its flaws, managed to leave an indelible mark on our hearts and workflows.
