It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Maynard Elmer Nichols—a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend—on June 14, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in Venice, California, Maynard lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Maynard was the cherished son of Lawrence Elmer and Eloise Clara (Barker) Nichols. He grew up in a loving family environment, although life presented its challenges, such as the fire that claimed his school books and prevented him from graduating from Oroville High School. Despite this setback, Maynard's determination and work ethic guided him to a fulfilling career as a sheet metal worker and foreman at Frank M Booth, Inc., where he was affectionately known as "Big Nick" and later self-dubbed "Medium Maynard."
His service to his country as a cook in the US Army and National Guard was a source of pride, and his "Daddy breakfast" of chipped beef on toast became a family staple. Maynard's love for the great outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and his many travels across North America in various RVs.
In 1959, Maynard married his first love, Jacqueline Dianne McDonald, in Carson City, Nevada. Their marriage, which lasted 33 years until Jackie's passing from cancer, was filled with joy and the blessing of raising two wonderful children, Eric and Carrie, in Oroville. Later, Maynard found love again with Dorothy Close Harty, with whom he shared countless adventures until her passing in 2023.
Maynard's family was his pride and joy. He leaves behind his devoted son Eric Nichols and his wife Alison Watts of Newfields, NH, and his loving daughter Carrie Alden and her husband John Alden of Chico, CA. He is also survived by his step-children: Griff Harty and his wife May of Shanghai, China, Tara Harty of Springfield, OR, and Roarke Harty of Chico, CA. His cherished sister Lorraine Poulsen of Chico, CA, survives him as well. Maynard was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Garrett Alden, Drew Alden, Patrick Nichols, and Lexie Nichols, each carrying forward his legacy in their own unique ways.
Known for his teasing humor, Maynard was a man who valued doing things well or not at all, a lesson he imparted to his children. His lifelong friendships and weekly Tuesday lunches in Oroville were a testament to his warmth and ability to connect with others. Though sometimes challenged by a lack of patience, Maynard's genuine kindness made him a "good guy" in every sense.
In his final months, the staff at Westmont helped him thrive, and the team at California Park Rehab provided him with compassionate care. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to these dedicated professionals for their support.
In accordance with his wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Maynard's life. As we remember Maynard, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love and adventure. His spirit, humor, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Maynard Elmer Nichols will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.
