In Loving Memory

Max E Montgomery
March 4, 1935 — May 10, 2026
Max E Montgomery, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was peacefully called home by his Heavenly Father on May 10, 2026, at the age of 91. His final days were spent in the comforting care of the VA Hospital in Fresno, California, where he succumbed to a long illness. Born on March 4, 1935, in the scenic heart of Dade County, Missouri, Max's journey through life was marked by love, service, and an indomitable spirit.
Max was the cherished son of Otis O and Opal Lorene Montgomery, who preceded him in death, along with his first wife, Brenda, and an infant son. Despite these profound losses, Max's life was filled with love and joy, especially after marrying his beloved Linda in 1999. Together, they built a life rich in love and adventure, traveling across the United States in their 5th wheel and visiting nearly all the national parks. Their combined family blossomed with 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom Max adored and delighted in crafting special wooden treasures like chairs, canes, and tables.
Max's early years were spent in Springfield, Missouri, before moving with his family to Visalia, California, where he graduated from Redwood High School. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, from 1955 to 1957. His time in the military instilled in him a deep love for the United States and its freedoms, a sentiment he carried with him throughout his life. In 2023, Max had the profound honor of participating in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., with his son, a journey he cherished deeply.
Following his military service, Max pursued an education in builder's trade at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. He established a successful career under his own contractor's license, building homes and light commercial buildings in Visalia from 1958 to 1972. His career then took him to Cal-Mat as a Sales, Marketing, and Service Representative, where he contributed to significant projects like the new Fresno City Hall and Fresno Air Terminal. Max continued his career with Hazelton Company and Stewart & Nuss Company until his retirement in 1997.
Max was a man of many talents and passions. A skilled woodworker, he crafted two violins from scratch and was an avid fan of bluegrass music, often attending festivals. His summers were filled with joy at the Wilsonia community, where he was known for his culinary skills, particularly his famous catfish fry at Cressman's annual birthday bash. Max's generosity extended to his volunteer work with the local fire department and Sierra High School FFA after moving to Tollhouse, California.
Max's quick wit and lopsided smile endeared him to everyone he met. He was a gentleman, kind, loving, and generous—a presence that will be sorely missed by those who knew him. His legacy lives on through his devoted wife Linda, his children Kelly Halterman (Roy), Chad Montgomery, Cory Montgomery (Nicole), his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, dear cousins, and numerous close friends.
A private ceremony to honor Max's remarkable life will be held on July 18, 2026, with family members and close friends from the Wilsonia community. Linda and the family extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at the VA Hospital for their compassionate care, which will forever remain in their hearts and prayers.
Max E Montgomery was a beacon of love and kindness, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, dear Max. Your spirit will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
