June 25, 1955 — April 17, 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Maurice Gaines Sr., a beloved father, brother, fiancé, and friend, who left us on April 17, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on June 25, 1955, in Baltimore, Maryland, Maurice graced the world with his vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication to those he loved. He departed this life after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the family he cherished. Maurice was the cherished son of Bessie and George Gaines, who predeceased him. He is survived by his loving family, including his five children: daughters Paulette, Lenise, and Maureen, and sons Maurice Jr. and Ty'le. His legacy continues through his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will fondly remember him as "Papa." A devoted brother, Maurice is survived by his eight siblings: brothers Zachary, Gregory, Kenneth, George Jr., and Arthur, and sisters Annette, Alverta, and Paulette. Among them, his twin brother Zachary shared a bond that was more than familial; they were best friends, partners in laughter, and co-conspirators in life’s joyful dance. Maurice's heart found companionship with his loving fiancée, Ms. Karen, whose presence brought warmth and happiness to his life. He embraced Karen’s daughter, Diamond, as his own, expanding his circle of love. His educational journey took him to Kentucky, where he earned his GED in 1978, followed by attendance at Airo Welding Trade School in 1982. Maurice proudly served his country in the Army Reserve as an E1, earning an honorable discharge in 1981. Professionally, Maurice dedicated many years to Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) and later found his true calling as a custodian at Cross Country Elementary/Middle School. For the past eleven years, he was affectionately known as "Mr. Mayor" by students and staff alike, a testament to his unwavering commitment and love for the school community. Maurice’s passions extended beyond his career. He was an ardent football fan, sharing game days with his grandson Daquan and his twin brother Zachary. He found joy in travel, often embarking on adventures with his close-knit group of friends: Ricky, Robert, Vanessa, Linda, Juanita, and Gail. Known for his meticulous care of his vehicles, particularly his cherished Lincoln, Maurice's humor and distinctive expressions—like "Watch how you close my door" and "It's not goodbye, it's I'll talk to you later"—will echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Though Maurice has left this earthly realm, his spirit continues to dance among the clouds, as vibrant and full of life as ever. In his own words, he is now "running these clouds," watching over us with love and a wry smile. We will honor Maurice's life in a celebration that reflects his joyful spirit, surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly. Maurice Gaines Sr. leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and unwavering love—a true testament to a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Maurice’s name to cancer research, continuing his fight against the disease that took him from us too soon. Rest in peace, dear Maurice. Until we meet again, we will carry your memory in our hearts, not as a goodbye, but as a promise to talk to you later.
