August 27, 1948 — May 29, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Maude Elizabeth J. Swanson, who departed this world on May 29, 2026, at the age of 77, after a brief illness. Maude was surrounded by love and family in her final days, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and care that will be cherished by all who were fortunate to know her.
Born on August 27, 1948, in Petersburg, Virginia, Maude was the beloved daughter of the late James Jones Jr. and Bernice J. Harris. Raised with love and strong values, she was inspired by the warmth and wisdom of her grandmother, Maude H. Hall, and her grandfather, Arthur "Sweetcake" Hall. Maude's family roots shaped her into the compassionate and devoted individual she became.
Maude pursued her education at Southside High School in Dinwiddie, Virginia, where she laid the foundation for a remarkable career in nursing. Dedicating over 45 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, she worked at various esteemed hospitals, including Staten Island Hospital in New York, Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Her commitment to caring for others was not just a profession but a calling, and she touched countless lives through her gentle spirit and selfless service.
A woman of many talents and interests, Maude found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved listening to gospel music, which uplifted her spirit and brought her peace. She was often found crocheting beautiful pieces, a hobby that reflected her patience and creativity. Maude cherished the time spent with her family and friends, always the life of the party, and she never missed an opportunity to share laughter and love.
Maude had a deep faith and found solace in reading her Bible, which guided her through life's challenges and triumphs. She took immense pride in her appearance, enjoying regular trips to get her nails done, a small act that brought her joy and confidence.
Preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Raymond Harris, sister Wanda H. Walker, and her ex-husbands, John Allen Wynn, Johnnie Robert Miller Jr., and Andrew Swanson, Maude is now reunited with those she dearly loved.
Maude leaves behind a large, loving family who will carry forward her legacy of nurturing and kindness. She is survived by her cherished children: Teresa Rice (Charles) of Katy, Texas; Michelle Wynn of Fulshear, Texas; Joseph Price (Lissa) of New Castle, Delaware; Janice Miller of Bronx, New York; Moniaya Miller of Richmond, Virginia; Andrew Swanson Jr., Kyle Swanson, Cory Swanson, and Raymond Swanson, all of Massachusetts. Her memory will also be lovingly preserved by her 27 grandchildren, including Dashia, Tiffany, Tieece, and Nonika, who was her devoted caregiver. Maude also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and her godchildren, Saionna Block and Jamez McNeely.
Maude's life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and faith. Her nurturing spirit and dedication to others will be forever remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, we celebrate her life and the indelible mark she left on our hearts.
A memorial service will be held to honor Maude's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to a charity close to Maude's heart, as a reflection of her lifelong commitment to caring for others.
