Mattie Jean Mortimer

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Mattie Jean Mortimer, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Mattie peacefully departed this world on July 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Mattie was born on January 17, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Calvin and Minnie Avery. Her life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering dedication to her family. Mattie was predeceased by her grandsons, James Ervin and Anthony Young, and her siblings Willie (Joe), Rufus, Tiney, Bunny (Catfish), and Shirley (Shelly). She is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Joseph Mortimer, whose steadfast companionship was a cornerstone of her life. A nurturing mother, Mattie's children—Demetrius (Dee), James (Jay), Daniel, Jane (Kim), and Mattie—were her pride and joy. She also leaves behind her siblings Calvin, Minnie, Benjamin, Larry, Timothy, Robert, Viola, and Ruby. Her family tree flourished with 26 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Mattie's legacy extends through a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who were touched by her warmth and kindness. Mattie's education at Oliver Cromwell School #74 and some online college courses laid the foundation for a diverse career. She contributed her talents to BGE, McDonald's, and later to Baltimore's Inner Harbor in housekeeping. Her work ethic and dedication were admired by colleagues and friends alike. Mattie's heart was truly at home, where she found joy in cooking meals that brought family together and capturing life’s precious moments through her camera lens. Her home was a sanctuary filled with love, laughter, and the comforting aroma of her delicious food. Her nurturing spirit and generous heart made everyone feel welcome and cherished. A celebration of Mattie's life will take place on August 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Hope Baptist Church, located at 1716 Gwynns Falls Parkway, Baltimore, MD 21216. Her family extends a special thank you to her nurses and care team for their compassionate support. In honor of Mattie's generous spirit, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to a charity of your choice. Though Mattie has left this earthly realm, her love and light continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all she touched. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.
