In Loving Memory

Mattie J Hampton
November 9, 1932 — October 12, 2026
In loving memory of Mattie J. Hampton, we celebrate the life of a remarkable woman who graced this world with her warmth, strength, and unwavering faith. Born on November 9, 1932, in Old Memphis, Alabama, Mattie was the beloved daughter of the late John Price and Nancy Murray Price. She was the second of four siblings and spent her early years surrounded by the love and values instilled by her family.
Mattie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and became a devoted member of Mt. Bethel MB Church. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life, and she remained a faithful member until her health no longer allowed. It was here that she met and married the love of her life, the late Rev. Joe Lee Hampton Sr., and together they built a beautiful family and ministry. As a dedicated first lady of four churches, Mattie embraced her roles with grace and commitment, serving as an usher board member, choir member, and the head of church fundraisers. She was also known for hosting memorable Sunday dinners, where her culinary skills and warm hospitality were always on full display.
Mattie and Rev. Hampton were blessed with eleven children, and though some preceded her in death, her heart was always full of love for her family. She is predeceased by her husband, Rev. Joe Lee Hampton Sr.; two cherished children, Albert Earl Hampton and Evangelist Bonnie Jean Washington; her son-in-law, Willie C. Washington Sr.; siblings, Lillie Johnson and Johnnie Price; grandchildren, Willie C. Washington, Jr. and Carolyn Denise Washington; and great-grandson, Christopher Austin Washington.
Her legacy lives on through her surviving children: Joe Lee Hampton Jr., Bettye (Bishop) Foote, Lillie B. Hampton, Mattie H. Langford, Willie C. Hampton, and Janice Marie Hampton, all residing in Brooksville, MS. Her loving sister, Lola Bush of Rochester, MN, also survives her. Mattie's heart extended beyond her immediate family as she cherished 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 34 great-great-grandchildren, along with a vast network of nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by her kindness and generosity.
A woman of many talents, Mattie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved fishing, cooking, baking, gardening, and quilting. Most importantly, she adored her grandchildren, who never needed daycare as she took on the role of their cherished caretaker. Her love for traveling also created cherished memories with her family and friends.
The family will gather to honor Mattie's life on October 24, 2026, at 11:33 a.m. at St. Mark Church of Holiness, located at 2596 Gillespie Road, Macon, MS 39341. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Mattie’s memory.
