Matthew Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his residence in Buena Vista, Georgia, on August 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 3, 1944, Matthew was the cherished son of the late Emma Lou Smith and Johnny Smith. Matthew spent his formative years in Buena Vista, developing a deep connection to the land and community that he would carry throughout his life. After graduating from Baker High School in Columbus, GA, he embarked on a career that showcased his dedication and work ethic. For two decades, Matthew was a respected labor worker at Dents production plant before spending another ten years as a custodian, where his diligence and kindness left a lasting impression on those around him. His career was a testament to his commitment to providing for his family and serving his community, only stepping back when his health began to decline. Matthew was a man of simple pleasures who found immense joy in the beauty of the natural world. He was an avid fisherman, a hobby that allowed him to enjoy the peace and solitude of the open water. He also had a talent for woodworking, creating pieces that were both functional and artistic. His hands were never idle, often found tending to his vegetable garden, nurturing the earth, and reaping the rewards of his labor. Family was the cornerstone of Matthew's life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Catherine Smith, and his cherished daughter, Katie Nicole Smith. The light of his life was further brightened by his three grandchildren, Ashley Matthews(Corey)of Americus,GA, Andrew Smith of Brunswick, GA and Janet Smith(Mark) of Buena Vista,GA who will forever remember their grandfather's warmth and wisdom. Matthew's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Allways Caring Home Care for their exceptional support and assistance during his final days. This kindness will not be forgotten. A service to honor and celebrate Matthew's life will be held on September 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, located at 32 Ebenezer Rd. Friends and family are invited to join in remembrance of a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Matthew's memory to a charity of your choice. Matthew Smith's legacy of love, hard work, and devotion to family and community will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered.
