December 23, 1948 — September 18, 2026

Matthew James McCabe, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on September 18, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on December 23, 1948, in the vibrant city of San Francisco, CA, Matt was a beacon of strength and warmth, who passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Matt was the beloved son of the late James and Bernice McCabe. He was predeceased by his devoted parents but leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his children, KC McCabe Isom and Erin McCabe Kalb, and his adored grandchildren, Matthew, Sisalee, and Lucas. He is also survived by his siblings, Pat Fox, Bernie Mason, Jane Kolling, and Lori Thornton, who all fondly remember him as the brother who could light up any room with his gift of gab and infectious smile. A graduate of Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, Class of '67, and Santa Clara University, Matt's thirst for knowledge led him to earn two Master's degrees and a Juris Doctorate. His commitment to education was inspiring, and he instilled the same values in his family. Matt proudly served his country in the US Army for three decades, from 1971 to 2001, achieving the distinguished rank of Colonel. His service in the West Coast transportation brigade was marked by honor and dedication, and his leadership left an indelible impact on those who served alongside him. A devout Catholic, Matt was deeply involved with the Hibernian Newman Club of San Francisco, where he shared his love for all things Irish. His generous spirit and dedication to his faith and community were evident through his active participation and leadership. Matt was also a sports enthusiast. He loved the competition, camaraderie, and friendships that came with being a part of a team. He was particularly passionate about football and swimming, and gave back to his alma mater, Saint Ignatius, with unwavering support. As Parkinson's gradually limited his physical activities, Matt found joy in watching his grandchildren discover the excitement of skiing, swimming, tennis, and more. A service to honor Matt's life will be held on November 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in the Presidio at The Chapel of Our Lady, located at 45 Moraga Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94129. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the caregivers who supported and cared for Matt and his family throughout his illness. Their compassion and dedication were a tremendous blessing. Matthew James McCabe will be remembered as a man of great character, whose legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
