It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew Braswell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Matthew departed this life on May 6, 2026, at the age of 79, after a courageous battle with cancer. His journey began in Kingston, Jamaica, on February 19, 1947, where he was born to his loving parents, James Braswell and Catherine Brown. Matthew's life was a testament to resilience, love, and devotion. Raised in the vibrant and culturally rich surroundings of Kingston, Matthew carried with him the warmth and spirit of his birthplace throughout his life, sharing it with everyone he met. His infectious smile and gentle demeanor left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him. In his early years, Matthew discovered a deep passion for helping others, a passion that would guide him through his life's work. His commitment to service and community was unwavering, and he dedicated himself to uplifting those around him with kindness and compassion. Matthew was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James Braswell and Catherine Brown, and his cherished siblings, Shelton Braswell and Missy Smith. He spoke often of the love and guidance they provided, carrying their memory close to his heart. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Cathy Braswell, who stood by his side with unwavering love and support throughout their many years together. Matthew was the proud father of son Shelton Braswell and daughter Missy Smith, both of whom he adored and watched grow with pride and joy. He was a devoted brother to Tim Braswell and Sam Braswell, with whom he shared a bond that transcended time and distance. Matthew's legacy also lives on through his four grandchildren, who were the lights of his life. He took immense joy in their laughter and achievements, and their presence brought him boundless happiness. A celebration of Matthew's life will be held on May 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Church of God, located at 1232 Martin Street, Raleigh, NC. Family, friends, and all whose lives Matthew touched are warmly invited to join in honoring his memory and celebrating the remarkable life he led. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a cancer research charity of your choice, in Matthew's memory, to continue the fight against the disease that took him from us too soon. Matthew Braswell's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived and the extraordinary impact he had on all who were blessed to know him. His spirit will forever remain a guiding light in our lives.
