It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matilyn Christine Cox, a beloved daughter, sister, partner, and friend. Matilyn, born on September 10, 2008, in Roanoke, Virginia, peacefully left us at her home on October 14, 2026. Her life, though brief, was filled with love, laughter, and an enduring spirit that touched everyone she met. Matilyn was the cherished daughter of Danny Lee Cox and Samantha Alicia VanLiew, whose nurturing and love shaped her into a remarkable young woman. Her parents' unwavering support guided her through life's many adventures, and they were her greatest champions. A proud graduate of William Byrd High School in 2025, Matilyn was passionate about education and was pursuing her dreams at Old Dominion University, where she majored in Elementary Education. Her dedication to nurturing young minds was evident in her work as a nanny for two years, where she brought joy and care to every child she encountered. Additionally, Matilyn's creativity shone through in her work as a licensed cosmetologist, where she had a special talent for making others feel beautiful and confident. Those who knew Matilyn will remember her as someone who loved cheerleading and cherished spending time with her two beloved cats, Turkey Cox' Austin and Salami Cox' Austin. Her furry companions were a source of joy and comfort, embodying the warmth and affection she shared with everyone around her. Matilyn is survived by her devoted boyfriend of two years, Logan Austin, who stood by her side with love and support. Her parents, Danny Lee Cox and his partner Gabby, and Samantha VanLiew and her husband Lawrence, continue to hold her memory close. Her grandparents, Bonnie Boitnott (Jerry), Sherry Johnson (Bryan), and Darrel VanNess (Linda), along with her siblings, Jason Cox, Jackson Wilkerson, Levi Cox, and Christian Cox, will forever cherish the moments they spent with her. Her cousin, Zachary Little (Brooke Greco), and numerous other family members and friends also mourn the loss of her radiant spirit. Matilyn was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Danny Leroy Cox, her paternal aunt, Danielle Leigh Cox, and her childhood pets, Rocko Cox and Ollie Cox. Their memories now join with hers, creating a legacy of love and connection. In honoring Matilyn's memory, we celebrate her loving heart, her ability to make everyone feel welcome, and her profound capacity to love deeply. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that will continue to inspire all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Matilyn's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting her spirit of giving and her love for helping others. May Matilyn Christine Cox rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love of those she cherished and who cherished her in return.
