In the gentle embrace of dawn on April 29, 2026, our beloved Mataniu Siainiu ‘Sei, known affectionately as "Niutà," departed this world at the age of 74, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on August 18, 1952, in Long Beach City, California, Mataniu was a beacon of love, strength, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Mataniu was the cherished daughter of Fasi and Polliana Sei, who instilled in her the values of compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment. She was predeceased by her father, Fasi Nu’uli ‘Sei, her brother, William Fasi ‘Sei, and her nephews, Keone Faipele ‘Sei and Franklin ‘Sei Jr., who have surely welcomed her into their loving arms in the eternal embrace of the afterlife. She was the beloved sister to her surviving siblings: Fasi Nu’uli ‘Sei II, Franklin ‘Sei Sr., Tua ‘Sei, Andrew ‘Sei, Alexander ‘Sei, Ataufeagai "Ata" ‘Sei, Beatrice ‘Sei-Smith, and Sinaiau ‘Sei-Utuale. Mataniu was also the devoted daughter of her surviving mother, Polliana Ana ‘Sei-Seaumalo. Her presence will be deeply missed by her many nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored and nurtured with the warmth of a second mother. A proud graduate of Marshall Hugh High School, Mataniu went on to serve her country with honor and distinction in the military for 12 years. Her dedicated service paved the way for her esteemed career as a captain at the San Diego Naval Base, where she was respected for her leadership and unwavering dedication. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mataniu was a devout member of the Samoan Baptist Church of San Diego, where her faith and kindness touched countless hearts. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly in watching sports with her family and preparing traditional Samoan dishes and desserts, which were always served with a generous helping of love. Mataniu's life was a testament to her steadfast commitment to her family, her community, and her faith. Her kindness and dedication to everyday life were qualities that defined her character, leaving a legacy of love and compassion that will endure through the lives she touched. A celebration of Mataniu’s life will be held on May 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Buffet King, 223 Palomar St. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the service will be available at YouTube.
