It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Master Sergeant Donald I. Rondeau, USMC Retired, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a true hero to many. Donald passed away peacefully at his home on April 16, 2026, surrounded by his devoted son and daughter. He was 90 years old.
Born on October 8, 1935, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Donald was the cherished son of Joseph Isidore Rondeau and Georgianna Roy Rondeau. He was preceded in death by his loving parents; his siblings Ann, Diane, Pauline, Robert (Bobby), Richard, and Leo; as well as his son, Raymond, and his beloved wife, Teresa.
Donald leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his surviving family: his son, Richard Rondeau; his daughter, Donna Lombardo; his stepdaughter, Teresa Fabre; his grandchildren Brittany, Danielle, Mikey, Raquel, Zachery, and Porter; and his great-grandchild, Asher. He is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews who treasured their "Uncle Don."
A proud veteran, Donald dedicated 22 years of his life to the United States Marine Corps, serving as an Aircraft Chief Mechanic and a Supervisor of Aircraft Maintenance. His valiant service earned him 21 Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Civil Actions Colors, and nine medals for his participation in the Vietnam and Korean wars. After retiring from the USMC, Don continued his passion for aviation as an airplane mechanic at Grumman Aerospace. He later became a partner in a brake and radiator shop and spent his retirement years as a skilled handyman, always eager to lend a helping hand.
Education was important to Donald; he received his high school diploma in 1955 and graduated from St. Leo’s Technical College with a degree in HVAC. His commitment to learning and excellence was evident in all he did.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Donald was a man of deep faith and community involvement. A devoted member of St. Francis Cabrini Church, he sang in the choir and found great joy in worship. He was actively involved in the Italian Club, serving as both President and Vice President, and was the proud Ambassador of Cruising in the Ogeechee Sailing Club. His dedication to service was further exemplified through his membership in the Knights of Columbus.
An avid sailor, Donald's spirit was most at peace upon the waters, navigating his beloved sailboats "Pelican" and "Pelican 2" through numerous regattas. His love for airplanes was unparalleled, and his innate ability to fix anything earned him the admiration and gratitude of countless friends and family.
Donald will be remembered for his boundless love for others and his heroic presence in the lives of many. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering kindness were a testament to the extraordinary man he was.
Visitation will be at Gambles Funeral Home at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, April 22nd. Mass to honor Donald's remarkable life will be held on April 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Cabrini, located on Middleground Road. Followed by a procession to the Beaufort Memorial Cemetery where he will receive full military honors. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering a man whose life was a beacon of love, courage, and dedication.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a veterans' charity of your choice, in memory of Donald’s enduring commitment to those who serve.
Rest in peace, dear Donald. Your legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know you.
