Mary Thomas, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully at her home on September 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with malignant tumors. Born on July 19, 1961, in Union, South Carolina, Mary was the treasured daughter of Lee and Annette Thomas.
Mary pursued her higher education at the University of Connecticut, where she not only excelled academically but also laid the foundation for a lifetime of service and dedication to her community. Her passion for giving back was mirrored in her active participation with the university and her work with community centers in Spartanburg and Union. Her contributions to these institutions left a lasting impact, and she is fondly remembered for her tireless efforts and compassionate spirit.
In 1982, Mary answered the call to serve her country, joining the US Armed Services. She devoted 18 honorable years to military service, retiring in 2000. Her commitment to duty and love for her country were evident in her distinguished career, which was characterized by integrity, bravery, and an unwavering sense of honor.
Mary's legacy lives on through her two beloved children, Leland and Demarcio, who were her pride and joy. She was also a devoted grandmother to seven grandchildren, each of whom she adored and who brought immense joy to her life. Her nurturing spirit and endless love will forever be cherished by her family and friends.
In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held on September 25, 2026, where her family and close friends will gather to celebrate her rich and impactful life.
