MaryEllen Allen September 17, 1928 - April 8, 2026 With heavy hearts but profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of MaryEllen Allen, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, on April 8, 2026. MaryEllen, who graced this world for 97 years, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 17, 1928, to James and Carrie Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Marvin, her cherished husband George Allen, and her son Steven. MaryEllen's life was a testament to love and resilience. After moving to Portland, she met George Allen, the love of her life, and they were wed on July 15, 1948. Together, they crafted a beautiful journey that spanned 53 years of marriage, primarily in the Medford area, where they raised their four children in a home filled with warmth and affection. In her professional life, MaryEllen began as a switchboard operator for a Portland telephone exchange. A testament to her calm under pressure and dedication to service, she was one of the operators who played a crucial role in saving lives during the Vanport Flood of 1948. Her career continued as an admitting clerk and switchboard operator for four Medford area hospitals from 1957 to 1975. Her nurturing spirit shone brightly when the family expanded in 1965 with the adoption of the twins, Larry and Terry. Following her formal career, MaryEllen devoted six years to volunteering in various medical facilities, always ready to offer a helping hand. MaryEllen's interests were deeply rooted in her family and in extending kindness to others. She was a gentle soul, known as the "Angel" at Oak Lane Assisted Living for her unwavering support and comfort to fellow residents. Whether providing relief to family members, reading to loved ones, or simply offering her presence, her compassion was boundless. MaryEllen is survived by her loving children: daughter Carol and her husband Jim, and sons Terry and Larry. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: John, Justin and his wife Jesseca, and Cory and his wife Marci, and her great-grandson Rio, each of whom carry forward her spirit of love and kindness. A celebration of MaryEllen's life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Oak Lane Assisted Living & Memory Care, located at 727 SW Rogue River Ave, Grants Pass, OR 97526. Friends and family are invited to gather to honor a remarkable woman whose life was a beacon of love and altruism. MaryEllen Allen's life was a tapestry woven with love, service, and unfaltering grace. She leaves behind a legacy that will forever inspire all who were fortunate to know her. Her gentle spirit and selfless devotion to others will be dearly missed but fondly remembered.
