Born on September 17, 1928, in Kansas City, Missouri, MaryEllen was the cherished daughter of James and Carrie Smith. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her brother Marvin, her husband George Allen, and her son Steven. She is survived by her loving daughter Carol (Jim), sons Terry and Larry; grandchildren John, Justin (Jesseca), and Cory (Marci); and her precious great-grandson Rio.
MaryEllen's journey of love and dedication began in Portland, Oregon, where she met and married George Allen on July 15, 1948. Their marriage spanned 53 beautiful years, during which they created a warm and nurturing home in the Medford area, raising four children. Their home was filled with laughter, love, and a spirit of togetherness that carried through generations.
In her professional life, MaryEllen was a beacon of calm and reassurance. She worked as a switchboard operator for a Portland telephone exchange, and in 1948, she played a crucial role in helping save lives during the catastrophic Vanport flood. Her courage and composure in the face of adversity were a testament to her resilient spirit.
In 1953, MaryEllen, George, and their young daughter Carol moved to Leggett, California, where their son Steven was born. However, the Eel River flood of 1955 prompted their return to Oregon. Settling in the Medford/Jacksonville area, MaryEllen continued her work as an admitting clerk and switchboard operator at four local hospitals from 1957 to 1975. In 1965, their family grew with the adoption of twins Larry and Terry, further filling their home with love.
After her formal career, MaryEllen dedicated herself to volunteer work, offering her time and talents to area medical facilities. Her unwavering commitment to helping others was a hallmark of her character. Known affectionately as "the Angel" at Oak Lane Assisted Living, she was a gentle presence, providing comfort and solace to those in need. MaryEllen's compassion extended beyond her family, as she touched the lives of countless individuals with her kindness and empathy.
Her interests were simple yet profound: her family and offering help to those in need. Her gentle spirit and nurturing nature made her a beloved figure in the community. MaryEllen had an uncanny ability to provide comfort, whether through reading to loved ones, offering relief to family members, or simply being present in times of difficulty.
A celebration of MaryEllen's remarkable life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Oak Lane Assisted Living & Memory Care, located at 727 SW Rogue River Ave, Grants Pass, OR 97526. Friends and family are invited to gather to honor her memory and celebrate a life well-lived.
