Maryella Kerns Jansen

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maryella Jansen, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and esteemed member of the community. Maryella passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 16, 1940, in Watsonville, Maryella was the cherished daughter of Marcus Barnett Kerns and Anna Perrotti. Maryella's journey through life was marked by her dedication to education and community service. She received her education from Monterey Peninsula College, San Jose State University, the University of California Berkeley, and Towson University in Maryland. These institutions laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to learning and teaching. Her career as an elementary school teacher at H.A. Hyde School in Watsonville, California was a testament to her passion for nurturing young minds. Beyond the classroom, Maryella was a force for progress and empowerment. As President of the Watsonville Chapter of the American Association of University Women, she championed women's rights and education. Her role as a liaison with the California Arts Commission and the California Executive Board for the same association demonstrated her dedication to integrating arts and education. Furthering her commitment to service, Maryella worked as the Music Therapy Coordinator at McNeil Island Corrections Center, where she believed strongly in the healing power of music. Her leadership extended to her role as Executive Director of the Washington State Medical Commission, where her vision and dedication left a lasting impact. Maryella's personal life was enriched by her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Jerome Charles Jansen, and their two daughters, Julie and Jennifer, who were the pride and joy of her life. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Maddie and Sally, who will carry her spirit forward. As we remember Maryella's remarkable life, we are reminded of her unwavering love for her family and her community. Her legacy of kindness, education, and service will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. Maryella's life was a testament to the power of love, education, and service. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her memory will forever remain in our hearts.
