Mary McDonald

Mary McDonald, a devoted servant of Christ, was called home on August 16, 2026. Born on June 18, 1948, in the Smoky Mountain foothills of Maryville, Tennessee, Mary was the beloved daughter of Warren and Lillian Beatty. She grew up with a deep sense of faith and family, values that she carried throughout her life. Mary's life was interwoven with love and dedication, most notably in her 56-year marriage to Turner L. McDonald Jr., whom she married on August 31, 1968, in her hometown. Their union was one of devotion, characterized by a love of travel, shared laughter and a playful rivalry over their collegiate affiliations—Mary with the Tennessee Volunteers and Turner with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Together, they built a life rich in love, faith, and family. Mary was a proud graduate of Maryville High School and attended the University of Tennessee. Her passion for learning extended to her lifelong love of reading, particularly devotional literature and spiritual biographies. Her faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life, a sentiment she shared with everyone she met. An artist at heart, Mary found joy in cross-stitching, crafting beautiful pieces that adorned her home and delighted friends and family as gifts. She also enjoyed making dresses for her young daughters, complete with embroidery work of her own making. Her creativity also fueled her dream of authoring a memoir, a testament to her experiences and memories from childhood, and the impact of her Christian faith in her life. Mary and Turner were always active members of their church communities, most recently as members of First Baptist Church of Melboune. For many years while residing in South Carolina, Mary and Turner were active contributors to the youth ministry at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo, South Carolina, where they impacted many young people through their generosity and support. Their dedication to their faith community was a reflection of their deep commitment to service and fellowship. Mary took great joy in her family. She is survived by her loving children, Brian McDonald (Anne Turcea), Ashley Sovereign (Greg), and Mary Anne Newlin (Christopher). Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Madelyn McDonald, Wynn McDonald, Lucinda Evces, Theo McDonald, Caedmon Sovereign, Abigail Sovereign, Cole Sovereign, Carter Newlin, Drew Newlin, and Langley Newlin, and her great-grandchildren, Cole Wilson, Norah Wilson, and Flora Hendrix-McDonald. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Turner, her sister Sarah Beatty Cunningham and brother-in-law Larry Cunningham, and her granddaughter Lacey Sovereign. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who loved them. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Amedisys Hospice care services of Melbourne, FL, for their compassionate care during Mary's illness. They also express deep appreciation to the administration, staff, and residents of Bethesda On Turkey Creek assisted living facility for their unwavering support and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Mary's memory to the Alzheimer's Research Association. A private ceremony will be held to celebrate Mary's life. Though she is no longer with us in body, Mary's spirit, love, and laughter will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
