It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Mary Lou Fretham, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, who left this world on April 5, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on September 16, 1935, in the quaint town of St. Clair, Minnesota, Mary Lou was the cherished daughter of Paul and Mae Schalow.
Mary Lou's life was a tapestry of love, resilience, and dedication. She was predeceased by her devoted parents, Paul and Mae Schalow, her five brothers, six sisters, and two grandsons, whose memories she carried close to her heart. She is survived by her loving family: Carol Blaisdell of Owatonna, MN, Ronald Robinson (Ronnie) of Owatonna, MN, Gary (Brenda) Robinson of Claremont, MN, Todd Larson of Blooming Prairie, MN, David (Lisa) Larson of Owatonna, MN, Tammy (Mike) Dolney of Webster, SD, David (Darlene) Fretham of Winnebago, MN, Beth (Doug) Brown, and Esther Nelson, both of Chicago, IL. Mary Lou's legacy lives on in her ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory and strive to emulate her grace and strength.
Mary Lou's journey through life was marked by love and companionship. She married Ronald Robinson in Waseca, MN, and together they had three wonderful children. After parting ways, she found love again in 1964, marrying LaVerne Larson. Together they welcomed three more children and shared a bond that lasted until LaVerne's passing from cancer in 2005. With resilience and an open heart, Mary Lou found happiness once more with Gordon Fretham, whom she married and loved until his passing in 2014.
A hardworking and devoted individual, Mary Lou worked tirelessly in various roles to support her family, finally retiring from Truth Hardware in Owatonna, MN. She was a dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she enriched her community through many years of service and fellowship. Her active participation in Senior Place activities, day trips, and events was a testament to her vibrant spirit.
Mary Lou was an avid bird watcher and a passionate cook, who delighted in walking and exercising with friends. Her kindness and generosity were remarkable, and she had an unyielding passion for helping others and maintaining a clean and welcoming home. Her energy and dedication were such that she often jokingly claimed she could "outwork" any of her children, a testament to her indomitable spirit and zest for life.
A service celebrating Mary Lou's life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, where she found solace and community. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in her memory, ensuring that her legacy of love and service continues.
