Pendleton, Oregon—Mary Koch, a cherished member of our community, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, at the age of 94, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on November 22, 1931, to Gilbert "Mac" McBee and Birdine Agnes Johnson McBee, Mary was a beacon of grace and resilience whose life was a testament to service, love, and unwavering devotion to family and community. Mary’s early years in Pendleton set the foundation for a life rich in experiences and achievements. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1949, and with a heart full of ambition, she pursued higher education at the University of Oregon. Her journey in academia continued as she transferred to OHSU in Portland, where she earned her degree in Nursing and fatefully met the love of her life, Richard Koch, a medical student then. Their love blossomed and culminated in marriage on December 27, 1952, in Pendleton. Together, Mary and Richard embarked on a journey that intertwined their personal and professional lives. Her passion for nursing led her to work at the Union Pacific Railroad Hospital in San Francisco, a testament to her unwavering commitment to caring for others. When Richard established his medical practice in Pilot Rock, OR, in 1954, Mary stood by his side as a nurse and receptionist, creating a welcoming environment for their patients. Her dedication extended beyond the confines of their office, enriching the lives of those she served. Mary's life was beautifully enriched by her involvement in various organizations. As an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, P.E.O. Chapter CM, Current Lit, Girls Club, and Kill Kare, she found joy in fellowship and community service. Her love for bridge was well-known, and she cherished the friendships formed around the card table. Family was the cornerstone of Mary’s life. Though predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Richard Koch, her parents, her son-in-law Wayne Low, and her brother, Dr. John G. McBee, her legacy of love continues through her surviving family members. Mary is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Mary Ann Low and Susan Talbot, her cherished grandsons Richard Low (Kim), Tim Low (Jackie), Jake Talbot (Jessica), her dear granddaughter Jackie Talbot, and her sister-in-law Carolyn McBee. Mary was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her later years. Her life was further graced by numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Mary’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness were gifts she shared with all who knew her. Her legacy is one of love, compassion, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of her family and community. She will be profoundly missed but forever cherished in the memories she created and the lives she touched. In remembrance of Mary, a celebration of her life will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Pendleton, where family and friends will gather to honor a life well-lived and a spirit that will continue to inspire. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer or a charity of one's choice, reflecting Mary’s lifelong commitment to service and community. May her soul rest in eternal peace, enveloped in the love of those she so dearly loved and who loved her in return.
