In loving memory, we celebrate a remarkable life filled with love, kindness, and devotion. Mary Jo Nolen, affectionately known as Jo, peacefully departed this world on May 11, 2026, at the age of 86, surrounded by the love of her family in her cherished hometown of Atlanta, GA. Born on February 4, 1940, to NS and Mary Lou Johnson, Jo was a beacon of warmth and generosity, touching the lives of all who knew her.
Jo's journey began in the vibrant community of East Point, GA, where she graduated from Russell High School. Her early career blossomed at Continental Insurance Company, where she served diligently as a legal secretary. Her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering work ethic earned her deep respect amongst colleagues. After retirement, Jo brought her infectious smile and genuine warmth to Walmart, where she welcomed countless customers as a beloved door greeter.
A woman of profound faith, Jo was a devoted member of Willingham Drive Baptist Church. Her melodious voice was a cherished addition to the church choir, where she found joy in singing praises. Her faith was not just a part of her Sunday routine but a guiding light in her everyday life.
Jo was predeceased by her loving parents, step-daughter Denise Latham, and cherished grandsons Brian Bishop and Charles Nichols. She is survived by her devoted sons, Andy (Anita) Nolen and Randy Nolen, as well as her dear step-daughter, Debbie Kelley. Her legacy continues through her treasured family, including two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored deeply.
Her heart was her family's cornerstone, and nothing brought her more joy than gathering her loved ones around a table filled with her celebrated culinary creations. Jo's kitchen was a haven of delicious aromas and comforting dishes, known especially for her perfect pound cake and the sumptuous seven-layer chocolate cake that delighted generations.
Jo's love for her family was equaled by her passion for puzzles, books, and the simple pleasures of life like crossword puzzles and television. Her eyes would light up at the arrival of a new baby in the family, and she cherished rocking them to sleep while singing softly, creating precious memories that will be held dear forever.
A celebration of Jo's life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, located at 147 Church Street, Jonesboro, GA 30236. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Guiding Light Hospice for their tender and compassionate care in Jo's final years.
In lieu of flowers, Jo’s family invites you to honor her memory by purchasing a bouquet for yourself or making a donation to Guiding Light Hospice at 157 Burke Street, Suite 110, Stockbridge, GA 30281. It was Jo's wish to support this organization that provided such loving care to her and her family.
Mary Jo Nolen's legacy of love and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she has left this world, her spirit lives on in the acts of kindness and the love shared by those she leaves behind.
