Mary Jane Phillips

November 29, 1941 — March 12, 2026

Mary Jane Phillips, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, at the age of 84, after a courageous battle with cancer and pneumonia. Born on November 29, 1941, in Wood River, Illinois, Mary was the cherished daughter of Homer Thomas Mellenthin and Sarah Jane Sherfy. Mary's life was a testament to resilience and love. Despite the challenges she faced, she carried herself with a quiet dignity and strength that touched everyone she met. She was predeceased by her parents, her devoted husband, Ronald Phillips, with whom she shared 38 wonderful years of marriage, her brother Tom Mellenthin, sisters Bertie Manka and Patti Lowe, her infant grandson Harold Ricky Martin, and an infant son, Phil. Mary's heart was as vast as her family, which she adored deeply. She is survived by her loving children: daughters Jackie Mellenthin, Theresa Stagner, Sarah and her husband Ted Tierney, and Carol Phillips; sons Kevin and his wife Georgia, and Ron and his wife Jennifer Phillips. Her brothers Kenny and Mike Mellenthin, sisters Jenette and her husband Randy McMillian, and Barb Newman also survive her, as do her many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom she held close to her heart. In 1961, Mary married Ronald Dean Phillips in their hometown of Wood River. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, raising six children and creating countless memories that would be treasured by their family for generations. Mary's career began as a seamstress, where her meticulous attention to detail shone through. Later, she dedicated herself to housekeeping, tirelessly supporting her family. Remarkably, despite having only a seventh-grade education, Mary became proficient with computers and embraced new technology, showcasing her unyielding determination and adaptability. Her passions were as varied as they were vibrant. Mary found joy in riding her three-wheel bike with her beloved dog, Chaser, at her side. She crocheted dolls for her daughters, painted beautiful acrylic landscapes, and reveled in the joy of exploring new places through travel. Her siblings were her closest companions, and she cherished every moment spent with them, especially when they gathered to enjoy her favorite gospel music. Mary was known for her quiet demeanor and forgiving nature. Her open and kind heart endeared her to everyone she met. Yet, beneath her gentle exterior lay a fiery spirit that surfaced when she was pushed too far, a testament to her strength and resilience. Her eyes sparkled with a twinkle when she smiled, and her laughter was a soft melody that brought warmth to those around her. A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s extraordinary life will be held on April 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM, at the First Assembly Church, located at 1330 S. Hackman St, Staunton, IL 62088. In the words of her family, "Your courage, strength, and love live on in our hearts and minds. You will be missed! Love you Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend." Mary Jane Phillips leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. Her spirit will continue to guide those she leaves behind, and her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
