It is with deep sorrow and yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Mary Hancen, a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Born on May 22, 1957, in the heartland of Iowa, Mary left us too soon on April 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Mary was the beloved daughter of Sherri Lawson and Mike Hancen, who predeceased her and whom she missed dearly. We take solace in believing she has found peace in their company once more. She is survived by her loving family, including her four sisters and two brothers, who cherished their times together and will forever remember her as the heart of their family gatherings. Mary dedicated her life to the compassionate care of others as a registered nurse. Her career was more than a job to her—it was a calling. Her colleagues and patients alike were touched by her gentle spirit and unwavering dedication. Mary’s ability to connect with people, offering comfort and kindness in their times of need, was a testament to her character and the profound love she held for humanity. Although Mary never married, her life was rich with love and joy. She was a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews, and a doting grandmother to her two grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Her nurturing spirit and infectious laughter will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know her. Mary’s life will be celebrated in a private ceremony, honoring her wishes for an intimate gathering of her closest family and friends. While we grieve her physical absence, we also celebrate the beautiful legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of compassion, selflessness, and unwavering love.
