Mary Ellen Gibson

Mary Ellen Gibson, lovingly known as "Duke," passed away peacefully at Piedmont Hospital on September 18, 2026, at the age of 62. Born on September 6, 1964, in Augusta, GA, Mary was the cherished daughter of Author Gibson Sr. and Catherine Gibson. Mary is remembered as a devoted and nurturing individual who leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her two brothers Jimmy Gibson and Author Gibson Jr., and her infant son, DeVante Alvin Gibson. Her memory will forever be cherished by her extensive and loving family, including her siblings Mary A. Gibson (John Utley), Rose Mary (Leroy) Knapper, Willie (Penny) Gibson, and David Gibson. Mary shared a beautiful 28-year partnership with her life partner, Ronnie Smith. She also held a special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews: Catherine Gibson, Jermeka Gibson, Jerneka Gibson, Tyeisha Royals, Keon Royals, David Gibson, Keith Gibson, Kathy Davis, and Dee Davis. Her lifelong best friend Ollie (Larry) Epperson and goddaughter Amanda Epperson were also dear to her, as was her bonus niece, April Hamilton. Educated in the Richmond County school system, Mary dedicated 26 years of her professional life to Shapiro (FPL) until her health prevented her from continuing. Despite facing challenges, her spirit remained unbroken, and she continued to bring joy and laughter to those around her. Mary's passions were as vibrant as her personality. She delighted in singing, dancing, and watching cooking shows. An artist at heart, she enjoyed drawing and was known for her quick wit and radiant smile. She was a hugger, never leaving without saying "I love you," a testament to the deep bonds she formed with family and friends. Her nurturing nature was evident in the care she provided to her nieces and nephews, playing an integral role in their upbringing. A service to celebrate Mary's life will be held on October 3, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Charlie Ried Memorial, located at 314 Laney Walker Blvd. The family invites friends and loved ones to join in honoring Mary's memory and the profound impact she had on all who knew They would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered support and love during this time of transition. Mary Ellen Gibson's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
