Mary Elizabeth Schrock

Mary Elizabeth Schrock, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at 11am at her home on August 22, 2026, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Born on May 20, 1948, in Ennis, Texas, Mary was the cherished daughter of David Schrock and Bertha Mae Friends. Her life embodied resilience, compassion, and unwavering faith. Mary's journey began in Bakersfield, California, where she attended Casa Loma Elementary before graduating from Oxnard High School. She pursued her passion for nursing at Ventura College, earning an Associate of Arts degree despite the challenges of pregnancy. Mary gave birth to her treasured daughter on October 26, 1969, and for 35 years devoted herself as a Registered Nurse at St. John's Regional Medical Center. Beyond her nursing duties, she volunteered to assist clinical staff as a” Candy Striper” and played a vital role in founding the Black Nurses Association of Ventura County, for which she was honored with a key to the city and recognition from the State Assembly. Mary’s deep faith guided her through life. She was an active member of many churches, including Trinity Baptist, Oxnard Full Gospel Mission, Victory Outreach, and Church of the Nations, her final spiritual home. Through these communities, she inspired others with her love, wisdom, and kindness. Known for her quick wit, generosity, and warm smile, Mary was a beacon of joy and positivity. Her lively personality endeared her to everyone—from bus drivers she enjoyed chatting with to family members who treasured her playful spirit. Mary found delight in watching shows like Jeopardy, The X-Files, and especially Oprah, engaging with Oprah’s Book Club and playing Family Feud with her great-grandchildren. Her passion for Wheel of Fortune was legendary, as she filled notebooks with puzzles and played along as if on the show. Despite using a wheelchair later in life, Mary never let it limit her freedom or zest for life. Predeceased by her parents and siblings, Mary leaves a lasting legacy through her daughter Yvonne Brown, grandchildren Indigo Angilique Brown-Foster, Alexander Winters, and Joel Brown, and great-grandchildren Miracle Neri & Kayla Neri. She is also survived by her siblings Odessa Edwards, Ola Washington-Holmes, Joe Ann Stuckey, and Glen Williams, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her deeply. Mary Elizabeth Schrock’s life was a rich tapestry of love, service, faith, and laughter. Her memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
