Mary Elizabeth Nelson
October 30, 1941 — June 5, 2026
Mary Elizabeth Nelson, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully departed this world on June 5, 2026, at the age of 84, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with ALS. Born on October 30, 1941, in Bemidji, MN, Mary graced the lives of everyone she touched with her unwavering kindness, compassion, and warmth.
Mary was the cherished daughter of Henry and Audrey Berquist, who, along with her husband Richard Nelson, predeceased her. Married to Richard Nelson on July 24, 1967, in Afton, MN. Together, they built a family that became the center of Mary’s world.
Mary is survived by her devoted children: Dori Fulco, Katie (Paul) Doyle, and Rich (Kim) Nelson. She was a proud and loving grandmother to her six grandchildren: Elizabeth, Colin, Ella, Emily, Whitney, and Jay, each of whom brought immense joy and pride into her life. Her brother, Tom (Mary) Berquist, also survives her, cherishing the countless memories they shared.
Mary’s academic journey began at Milbank High School, where she graduated in May 1959. She continued her education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, before earning her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in Minneapolis. Her dedication to caring for others was evident in her career as a Nursing Instructor at St. Mary's, a Pediatric Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis, and later at Little Sisters of the Poor in St. Paul. Together with her family, she operated Calculators, Inc. in Richfield, MN, for thirty years, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit.
A devout member of the House of Prayer Church in Richfield, MN, Mary was actively involved in the church choir, book club, and knitting club. Her faith and community were integral parts of her life, as she found joy in uplifting others through music and fellowship.
Mary had a profound love for music, often filling her home with the melodies of choral and folk music. She was a regular attendee of the Concordia College Christmas Concerts and enjoyed many North Star Opera productions. Her love for reading was evident in her extensive book collection, which she curated over the years.
Traveling was one of Mary’s great passions. She embarked on countless adventures across the United States and abroad, visiting countries like Norway, Ireland, Germany, and Austria. One of her most cherished trips was to Sweden, where she connected with her roots by visiting her grandparents' home, which remains in the family to this day.
In her later years, Mary discovered a talent for painting and crafts, delighting her family with her newfound artistic expressions. Her artistic pursuits were yet another testament to her vibrant and curious spirit.
Mary was a beacon of kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her gentle nature and loving spirit made her a treasured friend and confidante to many. Her family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Mount Olivet Careview Home and Grace Hospice for the compassionate care they provided.

Mary’s family invites all who knew her to celebrate her life and the love she shared with those around her. Her legacy of kindness, love, and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
