In loving memory, we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Elizabeth Johnston Peebles, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, on March 9, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on September 10, 1934, in London, England, Mary carried with her a legacy of warmth, humor, and resilience that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Mary was the beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnston and the youngest six children.
Mary’s life was a testament to dedication and versatility. She embarked on a varied career that saw her excelling as a realtor, mastering the intricacies of tax preparation, running her own successful business, and finally retiring from a fulfilling career in administrative work. Her professional life was marked by integrity, commitment, and an unyielding work ethic that inspired those around her.
A devoted member of St. Thaddeus Church, Mary found joy and camaraderie in her active participation on the altar guild. Her faith community was an anchor in her life, filled with cherished friendships and fond memories. It was here at a pancake supper she got her little dog Sochi who stayed by her side .
Mary was a woman of many talents, known for her love of baking .
She was an avid reader, immersing herself in the worlds found within the pages of her beloved books. When she could, Mary cherished peaceful walks in the park.
Her sparkling British wit and delightful sense of humor were her trademarks, often leaving those around her in fits of laughter. Mary’s accent, a melodic reminder of her was a source of pride and comfort, and though she made her home far from England, her heart always yearned for the familiar streets of London.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willard F. Peebles, with whom she shared a life filled with love and adventure. She is survived by her three devoted daughters: Joan P. Gardner (Michael), Jennifer P. Harris (Charles Pryor), and Mary P McDonald (Brandon). Her legacy continues through her five cherished grandchildren: Kathleen (Katie) Gardner, Mallory A. Jackson, M. Halley Harris, Summer McDonald, and Autumn McDonald, and her two adorable great-grandchildren, Harper and James W. Jackson. She also leaves behind her dear brother-in-law Percival Brown and numerous nieces and nephews, each holding a special place in her heart.
A service celebrating Mary’s remarkable life will be held on March 19, 2026, at 2:00 PM at St. Thaddeus Church, located on Pendleton Street, downtown Aiken, SC. For those unable to attend, a livestream will be available at facebook.com. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Thaddeus Church in Mary’s honor, a fitting tribute to a life lived in service and faith.
Mary Elizabeth Johnston Peebles will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her infectious laughter, and her unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace, her memory eternally etched in our hearts.
