Mary Christine Mathias (Laney), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away in her sleep on August 6, 2026, at the age of 73, following a courageous battle with dementia. Born on May 17, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, Mary was the cherished daughter of Frank and Imogene (Clark) Laney. Mary's life was a testament to love, creativity, and resilience. She married the love of her life, Ralph Mathias, on August 26, 1970. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared a life filled with adventure and joy. Ralph and Mary were blessed with four children: Brian Mathias, along with his wife Aubrey Stevens; Tamara Vandenboom, married to Scott Vandenboom; Kevin Mathias, married to Lisa Mathias; and Jason Mathias, married to Theresa Mathias. Mary's legacy is further carried on by her 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride to her life. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Imogene, her brother Ed Laney, and her sisters Linda Searle and Joanne Laney. Despite these profound losses, Mary’s spirit remained vibrant and enduring. A woman of many talents, Mary found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a passion for scrapbooking and flower arranging, which allowed her to capture and celebrate the beauty in everyday moments. Her love for gardening was evident in the flourishing blooms that adorned her home, each a testament to her nurturing spirit. Mary also had a flair for drawing, and her creativity knew no bounds. She cherished spending time outdoors, especially camping with her family, where she created countless cherished memories. Mary's warmth, kindness, and generosity touched the lives of all who knew her. Her gentle spirit and loving nature made her a treasured friend and confidante to many. A funeral for Mary’s life will be held on August 15, 2026, at 1:00 PM, in the Sheldon Apartments Community Room, located at 831 West Sheldon, Gaylord, Michigan. Family and friends are invited to join in remembering and honoring the life of this remarkable woman. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Mary’s memory. Mary’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the support and love shown during this difficult time, and they take solace in knowing that she is now at peace. Mary Christine Mathias will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
