Mary Alice Barrow, a beloved teacher, devoted mother, and cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on December 1, 1929, in Hondo, Texas, she was the daughter of Origen Getter Crow and Emily Wright Crow. Her life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to education, her family, and her faith.
Mary Alice graduated from Hondo High School in 1947, continuing her education at Texas A&I, where she earned her degree in 1950. Her pursuit of knowledge did not stop there; she went on to receive a Master’s degree from Southwest Texas in 1965. Her passion for education translated into a remarkable career, beginning with the establishment of a private kindergarten in Taft, Texas. She dedicated 35 years to teaching in public schools across Taft, Pearsall, Corolla, and San Antonio, touching countless young lives with her patience and devotion.
In 1948, Mary Alice married her high school sweetheart, Edwin L. "Buck" Barrow, on December 23rd. Together, they built a loving family, blessed with two sons, Les Barrow (wife Debbie) and Dan Barrow (wife Deborah). Her legacy continues through her four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored immensely. Mary Alice found immense joy in spending time with her family, cherishing every moment she could share with them.
A devout Methodist, Mary Alice was an active member of her church in every community she called home. Her leadership extended to various educational organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma, the Texas State Teacher’s Association, and the Texas Retired Teacher’s Association. Her contributions and dedication to these groups earned her lifetime memberships in the PTA and the Hondo Garden Club. Beyond the classroom, she volunteered with the Bluebirds in the Methodist Hospital system and was a fervent supporter of the San Antonio Spurs, rarely missing a game.
Mary Alice was predeceased by her parents, Getter and Emily Crow, her sister Edith Dees, and her beloved husband Buck Barrow. Her life was a beacon of kindness, dedication, and love, and she leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and profound impacts on those who knew her.
