On June 7, 2026, the world lost a beloved soul, Martha “Sister” Summers, who departed this life surrounded by the immense love of her family. Born on January 28, 1934, in Jackson, Mississippi, Martha was a beacon of warmth, kindness, and resilience, whose life was a testament to compassion and community.
Martha was the cherished daughter of the late Eddie Eugene Hopkins and Matilda Pace Hopkins. Growing up in Jackson, she shared a joyful and spirited childhood with her siblings, Joseph Hopkins, Lillie Johnson, Marie Yarber, Emma Hughes, and Willie Mae Smith, all of whom preceded her in death. Her deeply rooted connection to family was a source of strength and pride throughout her life.
A proud alumna of Summer High School, Martha embraced the values of education and perseverance. It was during these formative years that she cultivated lifelong friendships and a love for learning that she carried with her always. After high school, Martha embarked on a journey filled with love and purpose.
Martha shared a beautiful life with her beloved husband, Smith Summers. Together, they built a life marked by love, laughter, and a deep commitment to one another. Their partnership was an inspiring example of devotion and mutual respect.
Martha’s legacy is lovingly carried forward by her surviving family: her brother, Robert Hopkins and his wife Lula of Jackson, Mississippi; her sister, Shirley Robinson of Jackson, Mississippi; and her niece, Vikki Bostic. To her family, she was not just “Sister” but also a source of unwavering support, wisdom, and joy.
Her life was a tapestry of faith, love, and service. She was a devout member of Middle Brook United Methodist Church, where she found both solace and community. Her faith was a guiding light, reflecting her deep commitment to kindness and service to others.
A celebration of Martha’s beautiful life will be held on June 13, 2026, at 11:00 PM at Middle Brook United Methodist Church, located at 630 Raymond Rd, Jackson, Mississippi. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well-lived and to share stories of the joy and love that Martha brought into their lives.
Martha Summers touched the lives of many with her gentle spirit and generous heart. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her loved ones.
