October 22, 1949 — October 30, 2026

Martha Jane Nelson, lovingly known to her family and friends as Jane, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on October 30, 2026, due to complications from a stroke. Born on October 22, 1949, in Salem, Illinois, Jane was the beloved daughter of the late William A. Gray and Gladys M. Stearns Gray. She was preceded in death by her cherished siblings, Norma Jean Gray, Patricia Charlene Gharst, Richard Franklin Gray, Carolyn Joyce Kinder, David Byron Gray, and her precious daughter, Heather Anne Nelson. Jane's life was a true testament to her unwavering faith and love for God and Christ Jesus. She was a woman whose heart overflowed with love, compassion, and dedication. Her devotion to her family was boundless, and she was a pillar of strength and kindness to all who knew her. On March 12, 1977, Jane married the love of her life, John Michael Nelson. Together, they built a beautiful life and a home filled with love and faith, raising their three children in an environment where God’s teachings were ever-present. Jane is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, John; her beloved son, Jeffery Nelson and his wife, Tisha; her cherished daughter, Susan Smith and her husband, Jason; and her four adored grandchildren, Emma, Laura, Angelina, and Grant. A proud graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, Jane pursued her passion for music by earning a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Illinois Wesleyan and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Her career as an educator spanned various roles, including teaching music at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels across Elmwood, Carlyle, Highland, and Oden, Illinois. She also served as a daycare center director in the suburbs of Chicago. Jane's dedication to nurturing young minds was evident in her work as a district choral representative for the Illinois Music Education Association. She joyfully shared her musical talents by playing piano and singing praise and worship music at her church. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jane was an avid reader and a gifted musician who found solace and joy in performing and teaching music. Her love for the piano was matched only by her love for the scriptures, as she diligently read the Bible multiple times, leaving behind a treasured copy filled with her personal notes. Jane's life will be celebrated at a service on November 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM, held at Makanda Baptist Church, 1548 Baptist Hill Rd, Makanda, IL 62958. Her family invites all who knew her to join in honoring her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jane's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting her generous spirit and commitment to helping others. Martha Jane Nelson was a guiding light to her family and community, embodying the virtues of a Godly woman with unending positivity and steadfast faith. Her legacy of love and devotion will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
