Martha Ann Tolbert Taylor
August 1, 1934 — May 31, 2026
It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Martha Ann Tolbert Taylor, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, on May 31, 2026. Martha was born on August 1, 1934, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Albert Hosea Tolbert and Alice Young Tolbert. At the age of 91, she gracefully succumbed to the gentle call of eternal rest, following a period of failing health.
Martha was a beacon of warmth and kindness, known for her radiant smile that could light up any room. Her life was a testament to the power of love and education. She was a proud alumna of McDonogh #35 Senior High School, where she first discovered her passion for learning and teaching. Martha pursued higher education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1956, a milestone that marked the beginning of her dedicated career as an educator.
For nearly three decades, Martha inspired young minds as a Math and English teacher at McDonogh #35 Sr. High School, and L.B. Landry Sr. High School. Her commitment to her students was unwavering, and her influence extended beyond the classroom, touching the lives of many who were fortunate enough to learn from her.
Martha was not only committed to education but also to her faith and community. Raised in the Fifth African Baptist Church, she later became an active member of Ray Avenue United Methodist Church and Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Her involvement in the United Methodist Women, the Silver Stones, UTNO Retirees, and the Alumni Association of McDonogh #35 Reunion, Class of 1952, showcased her dedication to fellowship and service.
In her personal life, Martha found joy in simple pleasures. She cherished conversations with her loved ones, tended to her garden with care, and was an avid fan of Saints games and track and field meets. Game shows and soap operas provided her with entertainment, and she enjoyed attending musical plays. Above all, she treasured her moments of peace and quiet.
Martha was predeceased by her beloved parents, her sisters Lucille Tolbert Bland and Esther Tolbert Ford, her brothers Alvin Tolbert and James Tolbert, and her dear grandchildren Mark Taylor Jr., Ronald Carter Jr., and Raymond Carter. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children, Alfred Taylor III, Susan Taylor Reese (Derrek), Katherine Taylor Carter, Mark Taylor, and Malinda Taylor Johnson (Patrick). She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.
Services to honor and celebrate Martha’s beautiful life will be held on June 27, 2026, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, located at 5276 Bullard Ave., New Orleans, LA 70128. Friends and family are invited to gather at 11:00 AM to pay their respects and to share in the love and memories that Martha so generously gave throughout her life.
