Martha Ann Gunnells Smith

It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Martha Ann Gunnells Smith, who left this earth on August 1, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on August 16, 1935, in Anniston, Alabama, Martha lived a life rich in love, compassion, and dedication to her family and community. Martha was the beloved daughter of the late Grady Lee Gunnells Sr. and Mary Lou Ballard. She was preceded in death by her cherished brother, Grady Lee Gunnells Jr., and her devoted husband, General Smith, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage until his passing in January 2009. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. A retired nurse, Martha was known not only for her professionalism but for her gentle and caring nature. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her profession, as she was a pillar of support and kindness to all who knew her. Martha was a dedicated member of the North Shelby Baptist Church for the past four years, having previously spent many years as a cherished member of Liberty Baptist Church. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life, and she found great joy in her community and her role as a resident of Chelsea for over 35 years. Martha's family was the centerpiece of her life. She is survived by her loving children: Martha Diane Johnson (Richard - deceased), Thomas Allan Smith and his wife Kathy, and Thomas Gregory Smith and his wife Teresa. Her legacy continues through her five grandchildren: Christopher Allan Smith and his wife Amanda, Becky Lynn Shirley and her husband Daniel, Chase Gregory Smith and his wife Raven, Alyson Michele Roberts, and Mercedes Lynn Headley and her husband Ryan. She also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom she adored and cherished. Martha was renowned for her hospitality and the warmth she extended to everyone around her. Her home was often the gathering place for family celebrations, where her love and laughter created lasting memories for all. A service to honor and celebrate Martha’s life will be held on August 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Bolton Funeral Home, located at 207 Hwy 47 S, Columbiana, Alabama 35051. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the North Shelby Baptist Church Building Fund or the First Baptist Church of Thorsby. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Betty Swann for her unwavering support and love. Special thanks are also extended to Enhabit Hospice, Jessica Craig, and Sharon Jones for their compassionate care. Martha Ann Gunnells Smith was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her legacy of kindness, love, and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
