Marshall Jerome Hairston, a beloved soul known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family, passed peacefully at his home in the company of his cherished daughter and granddaughter on October 17, 2026. Born on December 7, 1953, in Danville, VA, Marshall's life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and love. Raised by his devoted mother, Jerene Inge Hairston Hines, and nurturing father, James “Sonny Boy” Hairston, Marshall was deeply shaped by their guidance and the values they instilled in him. He was also influenced by his biological father, Leon Moore. Throughout his life, he carried the memory of his parents and siblings Kimani Moore, Tony Hairston, and Curtis Hairston, who predeceased him, in his heart. Marshall's education in the Danville public school system was a stepping stone to earning an associate’s degree from National Business College. His dedication to his country was evident in his honorable service in the U.S. Army, a commitment that reflected his steadfast character. For many years, Marshall contributed his skills and hard work at Dibrell Brothers, later known as Dimon, before retiring from GTI. Beyond his professional life, Marshall found joy in the simple pleasures of fellowship and spending time with family. Known for his stylish flair and love of walking, he was a man who embraced the beauty in everyday moments. Marshall's legacy is lovingly carried on by his daughter, Tamara Ray of Danville, VA, and his son, Tory Spratt, Sr. of Georgia. His spirit also lives on in his treasured grandchildren, Neriah Ray-Saunders and Tory Spratt, Jr., as well as his sisters, LaQuinta Moore of Norfolk, VA, Linda Walters, and Phyllis Hartridge, both of Danville, VA. A host of other relatives and friends will remember him for his kind, genuine, and family-focused nature. A celebration of Marshall's life will be held on October 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. As we gather to honor him, we reflect on the words of comfort shared by his family: "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Marshall's memory. His life was a beacon of love and light, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him.
