Marlene D. Pinkney

May 6, 1931 — October 15, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Marlene D. Pinkney, who left us on October 15, 2026, peacefully and surrounded by love. Born on May 6, 1931, in the small town of Delta, Utah, Marlene was the cherished daughter of Morton Richards Durham and Helen King Durham. She spent her formative years in the vibrant community of Salt Lake City, Utah, where her journey of love, laughter, and service began. Marlene was a woman of boundless grace and generosity, known for her warmth and the open-hearted welcome she extended to all who crossed her path. Her humor was infectious, and her home was a haven for those seeking solace, a listening ear, or simply a cup of coffee or tea shared over stories of joy and hardship alike. As a member of the League of Utah Writers, her passion for storytelling was evident in her award-winning short stories and poetry, which graced the pages of local publications. Her creativity extended beyond words; she possessed a keen eye for interior design and was ever ready to offer her talents to anyone in need of her artistic touch. As a longtime member of the Democratic Party, she made her mark through her service as vice chairman of voting district 519 and as secretary in the 28th Legislative District. Her dedication was recognized when she had the opportunity to personally meet Robert F. Kennedy, a memory she cherished. She had an attraction to other cultures, and in particular Native Americans of the Southwest. She enjoyed many trips to New Mexico exploring the heritage, culture, foods, music and traditions of our native brothers and sisters. Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, LaMar, her parents, two sisters, a brother, her son David Pinkney, and grandson Neil Munroe. She is survived by her brother Morton, Los Gatos, CA, and her children Laurence (Terri) Murray, Kenneth (Christy) South Jordan, Susan (Gordon) Hyde, Sandy, Helen (Kirk)Lorrigan, Logan, and Thomas (Renee), Park City. She also leaves behind a vibrant legacy of grandchildren—Jason, Nicole, Matt, Tina, Isaac, Ira, Paul, Dylan, Morgan, as well as fifteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Our family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Coventry Assisted Living and Belle Vie Hospice Care for the tender care and love shown to mom in her final months. A private service will be held to celebrate Marlene's remarkable life and a celebration of life at a later date. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Marlene D. Pinkney welcomes donations to a charity, nonprofit, church, or organization of your choosing.
