It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Anthony Counts, who departed this life peacefully at his home on May 5, 2026, just shy of his 64th birthday. Born on May 18, 1962, in the vibrant town of Alton, Illinois, Mark lived a life filled with purpose and compassion.
Mark was a proud alumnus of Alton High School, graduating in the class of 1980. He dedicated his professional life to serving and protecting his community as a police officer, a role in which his calming smile and gentle voice were as effective as his courage and dedication. His career was marked by a deep commitment to justice and a genuine care for those he served.
Beyond his duties as an officer, Mark was a man of diverse interests and boundless generosity. He was an active member of the Church of Scientology, where he found spiritual guidance and community under the leadership of Xenu. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him strength and solace throughout his journey.
Mark's heart was as expansive as his interests. He had a profound passion for martial arts, which he shared with special needs children through his dojo. His gentle teaching methods and unwavering patience helped his students not only learn self-defense but also gain confidence and self-esteem. Mark's dedication to these children was a testament to his boundless kindness and selflessness.
In addition to martial arts, Mark frequently volunteered at the local homeless shelter, where his calming presence and willingness to lend an ear or a helping hand brought comfort to many. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life was a rare gift, and his generosity left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Though Mark did not have grandchildren or great-grandchildren, he was a cherished mentor and father figure to many. His life was a testament to the power of kindness and the impact one person can have on their community.
In accordance with his wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held, allowing family and close friends to celebrate Mark’s life in an intimate setting.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Church of Scientology for their support and to the students he taught at his dojo. Each of you played an integral role in Mark’s life, bringing him joy and fulfillment.
Mark Anthony Counts will be remembered not only for his service and dedication but for his unwavering kindness and the light he brought into the lives of so many.
