Marilyn Mitchell

Marilyn Mitchell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, gracefully departed this world on November 29, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on September 21, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, to Samuel and Mary Nyderek Anzelone, Marilyn lived a life rich with love, learning, and laughter. Marilyn grew up in a close-knit family, alongside her sister Gloria, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond throughout her life. As the first in her family to earn a college degree, Marilyn graduated with a BA in Education from Northern Illinois University in December 1962. Her passion for learning and education led her to further her studies, earning a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Houston/Clear Lake, a testament to her belief in the power of knowledge. In January 1963, Marilyn married her college sweetheart, John Mitchell, in a beautiful ceremony in Chicago. Together, they embarked on a journey of love that spanned 45 years, until John's passing. Their marriage was a partnership rooted in mutual respect, adventure, and a shared zest for life. Marilyn began her career as an elementary school teacher, but it was her role as a school librarian at Mae Smythe Elementary in Pasadena, TX, where she truly found her calling. For 20 years, she was a beacon of inspiration, introducing new processes and technology, and nurturing a love of reading and learning in countless children. Her dedication extended beyond her professional life. As a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, she maintained lifelong friendships and connections. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and as an active member of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Clear Lake City, she participated in numerous charitable and community activities for 40 years, touching many lives with her kindness and compassion. Marilyn's hobbies were as vibrant as her spirit. An avid gardener, her home was always adorned with the beauty of her carefully tended flowers and bountiful produce. Her passion for ballroom dancing, shared with John, brought them joy and companionship, whether at local events or during their travels around the world. Their adventures took them to Europe, China, Egypt, and even on an African safari, creating cherished memories and deepening their love for one another. Family was at the heart of Marilyn's life. She was a devoted mother to her four children: Kathleen (married to Dan Finkelstein), Andrew, Margaret Subealdea (married to Frank), and Jean. Her grandchildren, Nicholas, Timothy, and Zachary (married to Keely), were her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Her sister Gloria Bush (and husband Bill) remained a lifelong confidante and friend. Marilyn was a woman of integrity, intelligence, and nurturing warmth. She valued harmony and was known for her ability to bring people together, whether through her successful Bingo nights or the family reunions held at their beloved time-share condos. Her legacy of love, learning, and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, the joy of family, and the importance of community. As we celebrate Marilyn's remarkable life, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to inspire us all. A memorial service honoring Marilyn Mitchell will be held at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Clear Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local library or educational charity of your choice, in tribute to Marilyn's lifelong dedication to education and learning.
