Marie Swartz, a cherished matriarch, dedicated healthcare professional, and beloved friend, peacefully departed this life to join the eternal embrace of her loving husband, James, on March 6, 2026. Born on May 16, 1934, in _, Marie was the beloved daughter of Elizabeth Kowalkowski and Uncle Wally, who instilled in her the values of compassion and resilience that she carried throughout her life.
Marie was a beacon of strength and warmth for her family and community. Predeceased by her devoted husband James and her sisters Pat and __, she is lovingly remembered by her children, Wendy Kotsakis, James (Maria) Swartz, Melody Swartz, and Daniel (Kelly) Swartz. Marie was the proud grandmother of ten grandchildren — Corey (Alison) and Kyler Kotsakis; Iliana, Kyra, Tristan and Jaron Swartz; Parker (Annie), Ryan and Gavin Swartz; and Benjamin Hubbell — and a great-grandmother to James, Bridget and Thomas Kotsakis. Her family was the center of her world, and she embraced her role as a grandmother with joy and enthusiasm, finding immense happiness in the laughter and love of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marie’s journey of life was marked by her marriage to James Swartz on June 7, 1963, a union that spanned 56 years filled with love, companionship and shared dreams. Together, they built a life in Glen Ellyn, where they were a fixture in the community, driving their white Checker Marathon around town to attend countless school functions and sporting events to support their children, and years later, their grandchildren.
Marie graduated from Morton High School and the Cook County Hospital School of X-Ray Technology, embarking on a 45-year career as an x-ray technician. Her commitment and kindness touched the lives of many patients. An active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn since 1974, Marie was deeply involved in her community, volunteering as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and serving as a crossing guard and room mother at Abraham Lincoln School.
Marie’s legacy is one of compassion, service and unwavering love for her family — a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
A service celebrating Marie’s life will be held on March 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 550 N. Main Street, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Suncrest Hospice and Franciscan Courts Supportive Living for the compassionate care they provided.
