August 8, 1938 — June 25, 2026
It is with a tender heart that we announce the peaceful passing of Marie Annette Smith on June 25, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on August 8, 1938, in the charming town of Gadsden, Alabama, Marie was the beloved daughter of William and Hazel Chanall. Her journey through life was one marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering spirit that touched all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Marie spent her formative years in East Chicago, where she graduated from East Chicago Washington High School. She went on to pursue higher education with determination, earning a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University Bloomington and later achieving a Master's in Education from Roosevelt University. Her passion for learning blossomed into a fulfilling 35-year career as a kindergarten teacher in the Lake Central School District. Marie's dedication to nurturing young minds left an indelible mark on generations of students, who fondly remember her warmth, patience, and engaging spirit.
On August 15, 1959, Marie married her beloved Samuel L. Smith at the Indiana Harbor Methodist Church. Together, they crafted a beautiful life, raising two cherished children, Todd W. Smith and Cara M. Scott. Marie and Sam shared a deep and abiding love until his passing, a partnership that served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Although her days on earth have ended, her legacy lives on in the hearts of her children and their respective spouses, Beatrice Smith and Greg Scott.
Marie was a woman of many interests and talents. She was an avid bowler and golfer, who took great pride in her lush gardens and enjoyed the serenity of bird watching. Her commitment to community was evident in her active membership with the First Presbyterian Church of Highland and later with the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. Marie's presence was a constant in the UUAW, various book and stock clubs, and as a cherished member of a local bridge club. Her dedication extended to volunteering at Munster Community Hospital for over 20 years, a testament to her generous and caring nature.
Strong-willed yet humble, Marie's steadfast character was a beacon for those around her. She was known for her loving and caring spirit, which she shared freely, enriching the lives of everyone she met. Her stubbornness, often affectionately denied, was a testament to her passionate and unwavering approach to life.
A service to honor Marie's remarkable life will be held on July 17, 2026, at 5:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, located at 10000 Calumet Ave, Munster, IN. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The National Audubon Society, reflecting Marie's love for nature and dedication to the preservation of birdlife.
Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at the Hospice of the Calumet Area for their exceptional care and support during Marie's final days.
Though Marie leaves behind a world that is a little dimmer in her absence, her enduring love and strength continue to shine brightly through the lives of Todd, Cara, and all those who treasured her. Her memory will forever be held dear, a testament to a life well-lived and a soul deeply loved.
