Maria Teresa Figueroa
March 24, 1945 — June 18, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Maria Teresa Figueroa, who departed this world on June 18, 2026, after a tragic accident. Born on March 24, 1945, in the vibrant city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Maria brought light and love into the lives of everyone she encountered.
Maria was the cherished daughter of Vicente and Maria Teresa Rossy, who predeceased her, alongside her dear sisters, Lola, Irina, and Aurea. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Ignacio Figueroa, whom she married on a beautiful November day in 1962 at The Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York City. Together, they built a life filled with love and family, raising eight wonderful children: Leyla Otero, Ignacio Figueroa, Carlos Figueroa, Jose Figueroa, Vincent Figueroa, Julio Figueroa, James Figueroa, and Jessica Figueroa.
Maria’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her own children, as she dedicated herself to being a homemaker and an extraordinary foster mother to many. Her home was a haven of warmth and kindness, echoing her tireless compassion and unwavering love. Her legacy continues through her 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the lessons she imparted and the love she gave.
Maria was a woman of simple pleasures and profound joy. Her love of crocheting was more than a pastime; it was an expression of her boundless love. Each piece she crafted was imbued with care, a tangible representation of her affection and dedication. She found joy in creating beautiful handmade blankets and keepsakes that will be treasured for generations.
A devoted fan of the Mets, Maria cherished the time spent watching games with Ignacio, sharing in the highs and lows with the same passion and devotion she showed in all aspects of life. Her collection of pilóns from around the globe, along with elephants and Buddhas, adorned her home, each piece a reflection of her vibrant spirit and appreciation for life's small treasures.
Maria was the heart and soul of her family, a woman of enduring strength, quiet grace, and selfless love. Her honesty and genuine nature endeared her to all who knew her, and her unwavering loyalty was a cornerstone of her character. To her family, she was an earth angel, a beacon of love and integrity whose guidance and presence were blessings beyond measure.
In addition to her husband and children, Maria is survived by her siblings, Gladys Rossy and Ray Morales, who, like all who knew her, felt the profound impact of her kindness and light.
Maria Teresa Figueroa's life was a testament to the power of love and the beauty of a generous spirit. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her loved ones, and her memory will be cherished forever. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we remember her not with sorrow, but with gratitude for the gift of her life and the love she bestowed upon all of us. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul, and while we mourn her passing, we celebrate the incredible life she led.
A memorial service to honor Maria's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Maria's name to a charity of your choice, continuing her legacy of generosity and care.
