Maria Sonia Brown
December 10, 1947 — April 2, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for her life that we announce the peaceful passing of Maria Sonia Brown, affectionately known to many as Sonia, on April 2, 2026. Sonia left this world at the age of 78, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's, surrounded by the warmth and love of her cherished family.
Born on December 10, 1947, in the vibrant town of Melo, Uruguay, Sonia was the beloved daughter of Mary Gladys Gilbert and Jose Enrique Etcheverry, both of whom predeceased her. In her early years, Sonia's life was marked by the rich cultural tapestry of her birthplace, which instilled in her a deep appreciation for family and community.
In 1968, Sonia embarked on a new adventure, marrying the love of her life, Val Young Brown, in the sacred Oakland California Temple. Their union, which spanned over five decades, was a testament to enduring love and commitment. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and the joy of raising five wonderful children: Estela Rupp (Carl), Alex Brown (Heather), Adrian Brown (Caisa), Stephanie Nicholes (Deric), and Sabrina Taylor (Bryce).
Sonia's world revolved around her family, and her greatest joy came from her role as a devoted wife, loving mother, and adoring grandmother to 17 grandchildren. She had an extraordinary talent for making everyone feel welcome in her home, where her open arms and kind heart were always ready to embrace those in need of comfort and companionship.
As her children grew older, Sonia discovered her creative spirit through crafting beautiful home décor and floral arrangements. Her artistic endeavors were not just a hobby but a reflection of her ability to bring beauty into the lives of those around her. Sonia was never afraid to try new things and approached life with an infectious zest for hope and a deep compassion for others.
Sonia's capacity to connect with people was remarkable, and she had an innate ability to make friends wherever she went. Her warmth and genuine interest in those she met left a lasting impression, creating a network of friends who cherished her deeply.
A celebration of Sonia's life will be held on April 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Midas Creek Second Ward, located at 2812 West 11800 South, South Jordan, Utah, 84065. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring her memory and sharing in the joy and love that she brought into the world.
Sonia's legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support for her family will forever be remembered and cherished. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the hearts of her loving husband, Val, her children, grandchildren, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sonia's name to support Alzheimer's research and awareness, in hopes of finding a cure for this challenging disease.
Rest in peace, dear Sonia. You have touched our lives in ways words cannot express, and your memory will forever be a guiding light in our hearts.
