She was 72 years old. Maria was the beloved daughter of Francisco and Anna Nieves, who predeceased her, along with her ex-husband, Rafael Rivera; grandson, Nasir Rivera; and brothers, Lewis and Raphael Nieves. Maria is survived by her devoted husband, Rogelio Diaz, with whom she shared over two decades of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their journey together began on June 3, 2000, when they exchanged vows in the serene beauty of Aloha, Hawaii. Their union was a testament to enduring love and companionship. Maria's legacy lives on through her loving children: her son, Rafael Jr., and her daughters, Irene and Diana. Her life was further blessed with nine grandchildren—Tamara, Aaliyah, Peter, Casey, Nazaya, Jeremiah, Joshua, and Lorenzo—each of whom brought immense joy and pride to her heart. Her twelve great-grandchildren added an additional layer of happiness to her life, ensuring that her loving spirit will continue to shine through future generations. Maria's life was marked by a deep commitment to education and service. A proud graduate of Jamaica High School in Queens, New York, she pursued her dreams with determination and resilience. Her career path led her to the New School College in Manhattan, where she diligently worked in the Registry Office, enrolling students and maintaining vital records. Her passion for helping others found its true calling at Safe Space, an outpatient mental health clinic in Queens, New York, where she dedicated 21 years of service before retiring. Retirement was not the end of Maria’s journey but the beginning of a new chapter. Driven by her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher, she earned her degree in early childhood education and opened the "Shining Star Guide Light" daycare center. Here, her nurturing nature flourished, and she made a lasting impact on countless children and families, offering them love, security, and a foundation for growth. Maria's joyful spirit was infectious, her smile radiant, and her heart expansive. She was known for her love of dancing, a passion that brought joy to gatherings and celebrations alike. Her fun-loving personality and grace in movement were reflections of her approach to life—living every moment with enthusiasm and gratitude. Beyond her professional achievements and hobbies, Maria's greatest gift was her ability to make others feel loved and valued. Her compassionate heart and gentle spirit were her trademarks, traits that endeared her to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her warm embrace and welcoming nature will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Maria is also survived by her five loving sisters, two devoted brothers, and a multitude of cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Their lives were enriched by her presence, and her memory will continue to inspire and guide them. A service to celebrate Maria's extraordinary life will be held on August 1, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Baptist Church, located at 224 Richneck Road, Newport News, VA 23608. A gathering of family and friends will follow, where stories will be shared, laughter will resound, and her vibrant spirit will be lovingly remembered. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice staff whose compassionate care and kindness provided comfort and peace during Maria’s final days.
