Maria Milagros Betances

December 6, 1958 — April 7, 2026

Maria Milagros Betances, affectionately known as "Mama" by all who cherished her, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, after a valiant battle with kidney failure. Born on December 6, 1958, in Rochester, New York, Maria was a beacon of warmth, love, and resilience. She was the beloved daughter of the late Luis Betances and Iris Leonides Betances, who undoubtedly welcomed her into their embrace once more. Maria's life was a testament to the power of love and family. She dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her husband, Richard Serra, with whom she built a life of joy and harmony. Together, they nurtured a loving family, raising eight wonderful children: Cecilia I. Llanos, Sonia Nova, Sheila Nova, Julio Nova, Yanneris Colon, Aitza M. Betances, Rachel Serra, and the late Wahid Nazario. Her legacy of love extends further to her 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom will carry forward her spirit and values. A devoted daycare provider by profession, Maria's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family to the many children she cared for. Her home was always open, filled with the aroma of her delicious cooking—a true expression of her love and generosity. Maria's kitchen was her sanctuary, where she poured her heart into every dish, bringing people together through her culinary gifts. Maria found immense joy in music and dancing, often filling her home with the sounds of laughter and rhythm. Her vivacious spirit was infectious, and her presence was a source of comfort and happiness to all who knew her. Her love for gatherings, whether large family events or intimate moments with friends, was a testament to her belief in the importance of togetherness. She leaves behind a large, loving family, including her devoted husband, Richard Serra, her children, nine siblings, and countless friends who felt like family. Each of these connections was deeply cherished by Maria, who believed that life's most precious gifts were the relationships she nurtured. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Rochester General Hospital for their compassionate care during Maria's final moments. Their kindness and dedication provided comfort during a challenging time. A celebration of Maria's life will be held on April 18, 2026, at 5:00 PM at Angel Hills Funeral Chapel, located at 1125 St. Paul St, Rochester, NY, 14621. Friends and family are welcome to gather and honor a life beautifully lived. Maria Milagros Betances will be forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved her. Her legacy of love, compassion, and joy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Rest in peace, dear Mama. You will always be missed, but never forgotten.
