Maria L. Benitez

It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the peaceful passing of Maria L. Benitez, affectionately known as Mama Maria, on a serene Sunday morning. Born on June 16, 1937, in the vibrant town of Corozal, Puerto Rico, Maria brought warmth and kindness to everyone around her throughout her 89 remarkable years. Maria was the cherished daughter of Antonio and Juana Vazquez, who instilled in her the values of compassion and service. She was predeceased by her loving parents, eight of her siblings, and her husband, Guillermo H. Benitez Malpica, a Private First Class in the US Army during WWII. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Ana Benitez and Evelyn, who, together with Evelyn's husband Michael Keith, surrounded Mama Maria with love and care, honoring the legacy of kindness she embodied. Michael, with his gentle and supportive nature, loved her as deeply as her own daughters did. Maria's journey led her to earn a High School GED and a certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her career spanned various roles across Florida, from housekeeping within the hospitality sector, working at the Altamonte Springs Holiday Inn to custodial work with the City of Altamonte Springs Parks and Recreation Department, and then as a full time employee at Seminole State College. She was proud of keeping the administration building sparkling clean and she was admired and celebrated for her efforts! Beyond and above her hard physical work, her spiritual roles as a devout Christian, a nurturing mother, and an ever-compassionate individual were most important to Mama Maria! Upon retirement, Mama Maria became a beacon of joy throughout Lake Mary, Florida, as she traveled in her trusty Ford truck, spreading kindness and warmth wherever she went. Her favorite stops included Lowe’s, Burger King, CVS Pharmacy, Publix, and her cherished corner gas station for morning coffee. Her laughter and hugs became treasured gifts to all she encountered, weaving a tapestry of community and love. A culinary artist in her own right, she delighted in sharing her Spanish cuisine with neighbors who became like family. Her garden was a sanctuary filled with vibrant blooms, a reflection of the beauty she cultivated in her life and relationships. Mama Maria was a woman of unwavering faith, a loyal patriot who cherished her American flag, and a devoted animal lover, especially to her rescued cat, Hopey, whose story of love and care remains a testament to Maria's generous spirit. In honoring her life, the family will hold a private ceremony to celebrate her enduring legacy. Expressions of gratitude are extended to the compassionate staff at Gentiva Hospice, Pensacola, Florida, and the Dragon Fly medical equipment company for their invaluable support and care. Maria's family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to organizations that support hospice care or animal rescue efforts, causes dear to her heart. As we bid farewell to our dear Mama Maria, we hold onto the lessons of love, kindness, and faith she imparted. Her spirit will forever guide us, her memory a blessing and source of comfort.
