Maria Elena Morales, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 2, 2026. Born on August 30, 1939, in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, Maria was the daughter of Ernesto Morales and Vicenta Maldonado. Her life was a testament to the values of love, family, and community. Maria, affectionately known as “Lela” to her grandchildren and neighborhood children, was a woman who found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. The joy she derived from her role as a grandmother was unparalleled, her heart swelling with pride for each new generation. Her home was a sanctuary filled with laughter, warmth, and the comforting smells of her cooking. Family and friends were always welcome, finding solace and acceptance within her embrace. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Fernando Rivas, and her children Maria S. Flores, Luz M. “Lucy” Flores, Osvaldo “Brian” Flores, Ana I. Gonzalez, and Juanita Morales. Despite these profound losses, Maria continued to embody resilience and strength, nurturing her surviving children, Juan “John” Flores, Milagros “Millie” Morales, Magda E. “Maggie” Gonzalez, Carmen L. Alicea, Margarita Gonzalez, and Maria E. Gonzalez, with unwavering love and devotion. Her family, including her daughters-in-law Suzanne and Maria, sons-in-law Ramon and Salvador, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, were her pride and joy. Maria's life was enriched by her love for knitting, crafts, and her favorite pastime of watching novelas. Her trips to Walmart were not just errands but cherished outings. Each activity was an opportunity for connection, laughter, and the simple enjoyment of life’s blessings. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, as she became a beloved figure in every neighborhood she called home. Her warm demeanor and protective nature created an environment where all felt cherished and safe. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Maria's life. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the love and support extended to them during this time of grief. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Maria's memory can make donations to a charity of their choice. Maria Elena Morales will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
