María, known for her unwavering dedication to her family and her indomitable spirit, leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unity. Born on September 24, 1932, in Higüey, Dominican Republic, María was the cherished daughter of Gervacio Núñez and Consuelo Paniagua. From her earliest days, María exhibited a love for nature and a joyful personality, characteristics that would become hallmarks of her life. Her early years in Higüey were filled with the vibrant culture and lush landscapes of her beloved homeland, which she carried in her heart throughout her life. María was the devoted wife of José Ramón Cruz, with whom she shared a life rich in love, family unity, and steadfast values. Together, they nurtured a family that would grow to include eight children, each a testament to María's exemplary and loving nature as a mother. Her dedication to her family was unmatched; she was a pillar of strength and a beacon of love, always placing her children at the center of her world. After her divorce at the age of 37, María faced life's challenges with courage and determination. She took on the responsibility of raising her children with grace and fortitude, instilling in them the values of discipline, perseverance, and the importance of family. Her home was a haven where her greatest happiness was found in the gathering of her family, sharing moments filled with laughter, love, and stories. In 1994, María moved to the Bronx, where she spent the last 32 years of her life. Her home was always open, a place where 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren could gather and feel the warmth of her love and the strength of her legacy. To them, she was not just a grandmother but a guiding light, a source of wisdom and comfort. María leaves behind her cherished children: Zoila M. Cruz; María C. Cruz and her husband Alberto Rodríguez; Nelson W. Cruz and his wife Irma Cruz; Ramón R. Cruz and his wife Lauriana Cruz; Alejandro Cruz and his wife Elizabeth Cruz; Ramón E. Cruz and his wife Sonia Cruz; César M. Cruz and his wife Raquel Cruz. She is also survived by the memory of her late son, Rafael A. Cruz, and his surviving spouse, Altagracia Brea. Her legacy is carried forward by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to honor her memory. María's life will be celebrated at a service on May 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM, held at William Funeral Home Inc, located at 5628 Broadway, Bronx, NY 10463.
