Maria Matijevic, (Oma) a cherished matriarch, vibrant spirit, and selfless soul, peacefully departed this world on August 15, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on May 17, 1930, in the quaint village of Mrzovic, Yugoslavia, Maria was the beloved daughter of Wendelin and Veronika (Lett) Heckele. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, George Matijevic, whom she married on April 2, 1955. Parents: Wendelin and Veronika, Siblings: Veronika Paul (John), Anna Riffert (Josef), Regina Zajaceskowski (Bud), Wendell Heckele (Erna), Barbara Matijevic (Steve), and Adam Heckele.
Maria's legacy lives on through her loving children: Elfreida, Rudy (Patty), and Rosemary (Louie). Her heart and home were further enriched by her seven grandchildren: Vanessa (Will) aka Phil, Jen (Michael), Christopher (Sarah) aka Victoria, Nicholas (Alexandra), Elisabeth (Dylan), Dayna (Mark), and Jason (Lindsay). Maria's nurturing spirit extended to her 23 great-grandchildren: Alex, Anthony, Ameleo, Karyna, Landon, Nicholas, McKenzie, Athenah, Eli, Cadence, Noel, Griffin, Winter, Holly, Declan, Loclan, Taylor, Ryleigh, Jaxxon and Brayden, and her great-great grandson Grayson. She was also the honorary Oma to Lenon, and Tante to countless nieces and nephews, embracing all with her boundless love.
Known for her unparalleled culinary skills, Maria found immense joy in cooking and baking, often filling her home with the comforting aroma of her beloved dishes. Her vibrant energy was palpable as she danced the Polka and attended festivities at The American Aid Society and Donauschwaben, where she was a cherished presence. Summers were spent creating treasured memories in Wisconsin at the trailer, surrounded by the laughter of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Maria's life was a testament to the power of love and generosity. She was an amazing Mom, Oma, Tante, Sister, and Friend, whose kindness knew no bounds. Her family was her pride and joy, and she lived each day to support and uplift them. Her legacy of compassion and warmth extends to countless honorary children and grandchildren, as she was lovingly known as everyone's Oma.
Her life will be celebrated at a service on August 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, located at 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry, IL.
