Margaret Gilchrist

April 30, 1952 — May 31, 2026

Margaret Gilchrist, a remarkably spirited and loving soul, left us on May 31, 2026, slipping away peacefully in her sleep after courageously fighting the good fight. She was 74 years old. Born on April 30, 1952, in the quaint town of Wagram, North Carolina, Margaret's life was a testament to love, resilience, and boundless generosity. The daughter of Amelia and James Edgar Gilchrist, Margaret was blessed with a nurturing family that instilled in her the values of kindness and hard work. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers JC Jones, Donald Gilchrist, and Garland Gilchrist, and her sister Ida Mae Graham. Despite these losses, Margaret's spirit remained unbroken, and her heart remained open to all who were fortunate to know her. Margaret graduated from Scotland High School in 1970, a proud member of her class, ready to take on the world with a smile that could light up any room. Her professional journey took her to the bustling streets of New York City, where she worked for the New York Telephone Company. After years of dedicated service, she retired and briefly resided in Delaware before returning to her beloved Wagram, North Carolina, where her roots ran deep. Margaret's life was adorned with the love of her family. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Angela Gilchrist, who was the light of her life. Her legacy of love and laughter continues through her grandchildren, Shatara Stanback, Shaquanda Stanback, and Shavonte' Stanback, and her great-grandchildren, Ke'Zarria Monroe, Ma'Kai Stanback, and Kairo Singletary. Her sister, Barbara Jones of Staten Island, New York, and her brothers, Peter (Ann) Gilchrist of Elizabeth, NJ, and Robert Gilchrist of Los Angeles, CA, will forever hold her close in their hearts. Margaret was not only a devoted family member but also a cherished friend to many. Her infectious laugh and kind-hearted nature made her a beloved member of her community. She was a long-time member of Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church, where she found joy and solace in her faith. Her hobbies included driving cars, shopping, and reminiscing about her childhood days spent helping her dad on the farm, driving the tractor and cutting grass. A service to celebrate Margaret's life will be held on June 6, 2026, at Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church, located at 21300 Old Wire Road, Wagram, NC. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the hospice facility that cared for Margaret, ensuring her comfort and dignity during her final days. Margaret Gilchrist leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her big heart and giving spirit touched countless lives, and she will be deeply missed but never forgotten. As we gather to honor her memory, we find comfort in the knowledge that she is now at peace, reunited with those she loved dearly. May her soul rest in eternal serenity.
