With deep sorrow and profound love, we announce the passing of Marcus Dewayne Shelton, who left this world peacefully at his home on April 25, 2026, at the age of 55. Born on November 7, 1970, in Washington, DC, Marcus graced the lives of those around him with warmth, humor, and an unwavering dedication to family and community.
Marcus was the beloved son of Rowena DeJournette and Morris Shelton, who instilled in him the values that guided his life. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Myra Collins Shelton, and his cherished uncle, Jeffrey Edelin. Marcus is survived by a loving family that includes his wife, Myra Collins, and his children: Monique Lashawn Shelton and her husband Lee Morris Jones Jr, Michelle Denise Shelton, Mercedes Danielle Shelton, Marcus Irving Young, Monica Diana Shelton, and Mariaha Donette Shelton. He was the proud grandfather of eleven wonderful grandchildren, who were the light of his life. His legacy continues in the hearts of a large extended family and a host of friends who cherished his company.
Marcus’s educational journey began at the Kendall School for the Deaf, where he laid the foundation for a life of learning and community service. He furthered his education at the Model School for the Deaf, where he graduated with a passion to advocate and support the deaf community.
His career began at Safeway, where he worked diligently for many years, building relationships and honing skills that would serve him in all future endeavors. Marcus's true calling came when he joined Deaf Reach, a community organization dedicated to empowering deaf individuals. In this role, he found immense fulfillment and joy, dedicating his life to advocacy and support, impacting countless lives along the way.
Marcus was an active and cherished member of the Deaf Reach community, known for his ability to make others laugh without uttering a single word. He was an avid gamer, and his circle of friends was vast, connected by shared interests and a mutual respect for his kind-hearted nature.
Family was Marcus's greatest joy. He loved spending time with his wife and children, and his many visits and conversations with his grandchildren were the highlights of his days. His presence was a gift, and his laughter, a balm for the soul.
A service to celebrate the life of Marcus Shelton will be held on May 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church Eastland Gardens, located at 1234 Kenilworth Ave NE, Washington, DC. In honoring Marcus’s memory, the family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Capitol Mortuary for their compassionate and gracious service during this difficult time.
Marcus Shelton was a beacon of love and laughter, whose gentle spirit and unwavering commitment to his family and community will forever be remembered. He touched many lives with his kindness and humor, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
